There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.
She had so many children, she didn't know what to do.
She gave them some broth without any bread;
Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.
Parenting is hard… It always has been and it always will be…
Gods Original Plan for Family
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
The Damage the Fall Brought
16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.” 17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
The Problem…
1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground.
The Call
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

6 “ ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 7 “ ‘You shall have no other gods before me. 8 “ ‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Big Idea of the Message: Our sins have the potential to impact our children and the generations that follow.
Application Point: Through Christ, there can be freedom from the sins that have been carried down through generations.
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Big Idea of the Message: God has commissioned his people to teach subsequent generations who he is and what it means to love him.
Application Point: As the primary discipler of my children, I should live out my faith in word and deed every day, not just on Sundays.

Being deceived into thinking that keeping children happy is as important as helping them be Holy.

God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.
24 Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.
15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.
13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. 14 If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.
Big Idea of the Message: Father and son examples from the Old Testament illustrate that, while our influence on our children matters, only God can transform a heart to follow him.
Application Point: Every person has their own journey of faith. I can live in obedience to God and trust him to move in my child’s life.

Group Questions
What stood out to you most about this weeks message? Was there anything new to you, or anything you were glad to be reminded of?
Share with the group a time that you distinctly remember going against your parents will.
What was your thinking at the time? What was the driving force at making you choose disobedience?
What happened? How were you disciplined?
If you were the parent what would you have done differently and why?
At some point in every society “obedience” seems to end but “honor” never should. If your parents are still living where do you struggle with this command even today?
If your parents are no longer living where did you struggle with this most while they were alive?
What do you think about this promise in V3… Does it apply to all or just the jews? If just the Jews then why did Paul say it here? If it applies to all how might we interpret it for ourselves today in this day and age?
What are some ways parents might be provoking to their children?
In your opinion is the father more likely to do so? Why or why not?
If you have children, have you ever provoked them to anger?… I bet the answer is yes, so what did you do about it? Have you asked for forgiveness from them?
Eph 6:4b is a hight calling. Spend some time in your group praying for the parents in your group and the parents in our church.
Do any of your group members have any suggestions on devotions, books, conferences, podcasts, or other practical resources to help our families fulfill this command?
How can we share them with our church family? How can we help one another in this area?
If you are an empty nester will you consider being a mentor and or encourager to the younger families so they can fulfill this command? How will you do this?
