24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
Central Idea/ Thesis:
We must surrender something in this world in order to gain the world to come.
I Promise to Deliver:
A Biblical understanding of Self-denial, submission, and obedience, to make clear why surrender is important to renewing our faith.
Introduction:
Human beings in their first nature (which is physical in accordance with the world) are bent on their survival.
As Spiritual beings living this human experience we must surrender some things to make spiritual gains.
The method of surrender can be found in, Self-Denial, Submission, and in Obedience.
We have some great Biblical examples of Self-Denial, we’ll take a look at two.
Without submission there can be no peace.
So we’ll take a look at God’s requirements of submission.
Human Beings do not want to submit they want to dominant and survive.
Then we will look at the Cross of Obedience.
That is where we stake a claim where our Faith is concerned.

Self-Denial, Losing to Win
Willing to deny self, in order to grow in Holiness and commitment to God
It’s what appears as Losing in this world, yet it is winning in the world to come
Matthew 16:24
(Barry's Bureau Comment): Jesus puts the resolution to be a disciple hypothetically (if) but positively and speaks of anyone, referring to any would-be disciple. The prospective disciple must exercise his will; nobody becomes a follower of Jesus by drifting into it.
Moses is a good example of self-denial
Moses is a good example of self-denial
25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
Moses could have enjoyed the lap of luxury as a Prince of Egypt
Yet he denied the physical tmeporary riches of this world for the truth and surrendered to truth and God...
Esther is a good example of self-denial
For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
Esther also could have enjoyed the pleaasures of being a Queen
Yet she denied those earthly treasurers and stood up for her people
and in turn she stood up for truth and God...

Submission, Losing to Win
Submit to who, might be the proper question?
Because we will not submit if it means we are going to look weak (or cause us to lose).
In this lesson, we mean to submit to Jesus.

Submission is a humble attitude that demonstrates our obedience within a relationship, whether to God, authorities, or other people at work, church, marriage, or family.

Submission fuels order, without Submission chaos is produced.
Without submission, there can be no peace.
Jesus says that concentrating on saving one's life/soul is to lose it.
Jesus speaks to life in its most meaningful sense.
If we regard life as no more than this ordinary, physical life, if we spend our time and resources getting as much out of this life as we can,
Jesus is saying we lose life in its more critical sense.
To spend oneself trying to get the best one can out of this present life, the here and now, is to lose life in the total sense.
Scripture is not saying that anyone who concentrates on his selfish concerns, Jesus, will punish by having his life taken from him.
The person who focuses on his selfish concerns has lost in the best and most total sense.
He exists but does not live.
Jesus speaks of the person who emphasizes all that increases the sum of things he finds attractive.
It is selfishness that makes one's personal happiness the ultimate criterion.
It is self-defeating; it is to lose it to concentrate on saving the life.
It is different with anyone who loses his life, for Jesus' sake.

Obedience is where we stake a claim in our Faith
16 “This day the Lord your God commands you to do these statutes and rules. You shall therefore be careful to do them with all your heart and with all your soul.
All your heart and soul, which is your life
Jesus shows us obedience
39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
Our savior was willing to Lose that He might Win
Obedience is the outpouring of Love
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
We humans certainly obey what we love (think about that)
When we are in doubt on what to obey, do like the Apostles
29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
Know what God commands so that you can be sure you are obeying Him over men
There are no limitations on our obedience to God
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Jesus chose death on a cross
so that we might find life on the cross in obedience
Conclusion:
To renew our faith, we must consider what it means to surrender
We have taken a look at
Self-Denial and two great examples in Moses and Esther
Submission and the requirements on all mankind, recognizes that without submission there can be no Peace
Obedience in order to equip our ability to surrender, and stake our claim of Faith
If you are getting everything your way in life
If your goals and aims are for achievement in this life
then you are not surrendering
What are you doing that lays up treasurers in heaven and preparing for the life to come
that can only be done by surrendering in this life we live now
