Recap: Going through 1 John…learning the importance of both knowing the right things about Jesus and living the right way...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(H) Topic of DISCERNMENT…If you are a BELIEVER in JESUS Christ that has been given the GIFT of SALVATION and the HOLY SPIRIT, then you are capable of DISCERNING.
We can discern between RIGHT and WRONG and we can also discern whether something is FROM GOD or NOT.
CAN’T always BASE it off of the FUZZY FEELING or something, but you are able to TEST and SEE if it LINES UP with what you KNOW about JESUS.
SUBMIT to LEADERS as well… especially when YOUNG…yet we ALL can DISCERN THINGS
This is WHERE JOHN BEGINS the PASSAGE today:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 John 4 (ESV)
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,
3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
SOME BELIEVED JESUS WASN’T MAN… FLESH = BAD
NOT FULLY HUMAN.
JOHN CORRECTS.... JESUS WAS GOD + MAN
ANTICHRIST isn’t just an END TIMES FIGURE, but ANY SPIRIT that OPPOSES the true JESUS.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
OVERCOME the FALSE TEACHERS/SPIRITS
HOLY SPIRIT WITHIN = MORE POWERFUL than anything in the WORLD.
5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them.
6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
NOT POPULAR…NO GRAY AREAS.
FROM GOD vs. FROM WORLD.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JOHN goes FROM explaining about DISCERNMENT.... to TALKING about WHAT it LOOKS LIKE to be a CHRISTIAN...
BEYOND WORDS, LIFESTYLE MATTERS!!
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.
8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
LOVE ISN’T JUST something GOD DOES, it is WHO HE IS, a part of his very NATURE.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
THOSE who had LEFT the CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP......DENIED Jesus’ HUMANITY and therefore would DENY Jesus’ BIRTH/INCARNATION...
JESUS’ BIRTH…ESSENTIAL MANIFESTATION of the LOVE of GOD
HE CAME to DIE for SIN
10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
****GOSPEL! CROSS FOR YOU! (ROM 5:8)
GOD’S LOVE DISPLAYED IN CHRIST.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
GOD is NOT ASKING from us SOMETHING he was UNWILLING to DO......
OUR LOVE = RESPONSE to GOD.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
WE can BE PART of REVEALING GOD to the WORLD!
NOBODY has SEEN GOD…BUT can see LOVE MANIFESTED through US.
13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.
15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
JESUS was NOT MERELY the SON of MARY, but he was the SON of GOD.
HUMAN + DIVINE
16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.
18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
NO FEAR of JUDGEMENT IF in CHRIST...
STAND BEFORE GOD = RIGHTEOUS
WE’VE RECEIVED & GIVEN GOD’S LOVE.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19 We love because he first loved us.
OUR LOVE = RESPONSE, UNCONDITIONAL
20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
It’s NOT always EASY to LOVE PEOPLE.....
But HOW WE LOVE and value OTHERS SHOWS WHETHER or not we TRULY LOVE GOD!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Big Idea: The test for true Christianity is first an acknowledgement of Jesus’ humanity and divinity and then manifesting the belief that he died for our sins by our love for those around us.

JOHN’S MESSAGE = SIMPLE, CONSISTENT.
***MESSAGE........JESUS = REAL MAN + SON OF GOD....DIED FOR US....WE RESPOND BY LOVING OTHERS.
RESULT = CHANGE HOW WE LIVE....LOVE OTHERS.
