1 Kings 3:2-12 NLT

(2) At that time the people of Israel sacrificed their offerings at local places of worship, for a temple honoring the name of the Lord had not yet been built.

(3) Solomon loved the Lord and followed all the decrees of his father, David, except that Solomon, too, offered sacrifices and burned incense at the local places of worship. (4) The most important of these places of worship was at Gibeon, so the king went there and sacrificed 1,000 burnt offerings. (5) That night the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!”

(6) Solomon replied, “You showed great and faithful love to your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to you. And you have continued to show this great and faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne.

(7)“Now, O Lord my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around. (8) And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”

(10) The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. (11) So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies— (12) I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! (13) And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life! (14) And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life.”

Let read Verse 3 again

(3) Solomon loved the Lord and followed all the decrees of his father, David, except that Solomon, too, offered sacrifices and burned incense at the local places of worship.

Today God sent me to ask you a question:

What Do You Want, In Spite Of Your Except?

How many you know for yourself that God is a God of questions and answer. God will ask you a question with answers imbedded. As Pastor would say a loaded question. A question heavy with meaning or emotional impact….charged with hidden implications . One God’s first questions was to Adam and Eve“Where are you” God already knew where they were just like He knows were we are in our walk with HIM. He asked Moses “Why are your crying out to me? He already told Moses to move forward and lead His people. Or when He asked Ezekiel can these bones live? God was essentially asking him if he had faith in Him to restore the bones.

We find 1 kings 3 God asking a question to Solomon “What do you want” that is what I call a probing question-

Intended to help one think more deeply about the issue at hand…Intended to help one come to a conclusion regarding the matter at hand. And when asked by God what do you want?

I have found that many people find this simple question “What do you want” hard to answer. Some can be in a restaurant looking at the menu for 30 mins or more all while stating they are hungry.

Some people are asked in a relationship what do you want but can’t convey in words or actions to their partner what they truly want.

Some can’t answer what they want because they are uncomfortable outright saying what is truly in their heart. But how many of us know God gives us an open door to have a daily dialogue with Him. Behold I have set before you an open door of communication that no man can shut. God desires to hear from us. Yet often He will come to us in varies ways …Through His still small voice, via the rhema word, through open and closed doors, through His people. God is always communicating His will for us.

I would argue that one can’t submit to God’s will until you know your will and you can’t know your will ....until you know God’s will for your life and this is why He often ask “ What do you want?”

I will give you bible.. Hanna wanted a baby... God needed a seer. God gives her a baby. Her baby Samuel would go onto to be one of the most important figures in the old testament. God trusted him to pick Israel's first King. God trusted him to go down to Jesse house and find David to replace the first king. But Samuel would not have existed if Hanna hadn’t decided to answer the question what do you want. Hanna wanted a baby but God needed a judge and King anointer named Samuel.

So again I would argue one can’t submit to God’s will until you know your will and you can’t know your will ....until you know God’s will for your life.

What this shows us is the things we want according to his word is what God needs. What you want is your business

And God’s will is His business.

Tell your neighbor God is at work in your wants.

When we read this passage of scripture in 1 Kings 3 we find a perfect example of God giving the want according to His will. To bring the text into context...Solomon is the king of Israel in succession after his father David. In 1 Kings chapter 3 we find Solomon after he has made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt by marry Pharaoh daughter. He brings her to live in the city of David until he finished building his palace, the Lord’s temple, and the wall surrounding Jerusalem. Solomon is handed the Kingship because of David his father. The bible indicates Solomon just like his father had a thing for woman. (I am not even going to bother that) (Like father like son) (Stunting like your daddy) that is another message for another time.

When we look at verse 2 it says the people of Israel sacrificed their offerings at a local place some translation say (high place) of worship, for the temple honoring the name of the Lord had not yet been built. When we read in the bible high place it’s not talking about height it indicates alter’s that have been made for other’s gods. The scripture tells us God’s people were offering sacrifices on an alter built for other gods. Verse 3 says Solomon showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the instructions given to him by his father EXCEPT in this area. That means this was an area where Solomon was not following instructions. He offered sacrifices in high places. He is in a place called Gibeon where their are alters for other god’s... offering sacrifices to God. Somebody say....Right thing wrong way. How many of us know about doing the right thing the wrong.

*It is the right to go after a higher level of education but it’s wrong to pay someone to complete your essays.

*Its the right thing to join a church for the Bible says do not forsake the assembling of ourselves together but it’s the wrong way to operate in church the way culture operates (world).

*The culture is about receiving, It’s all about me and not service to the Kingdom

* It is the right thing to go to work for the Bible says if a man doesn’t work he/ she doesn’t eat. But it is wrong way to constantly be late & get an attitude when your supervisor corrects you via counseling.

*It is the right thing to want to help out and join an auxcillary at church but it is the wrong way to never show up when you sign up.

*Its the right thing to check on your brother or sister because you haven’t seen them in fellowship for a while. Its the wrong way to do it your motive was to go tell all their business.

Sometimes the things that are fine to do in one place are not appropriate in another. So we find Solomon is doing the right thing the wrong way.

But even after that God comes to Solonom....Just like He comes to us Even after our temper tamptrum when he says go make it right and apologize. God comes and says come to me, all you who are weary and I will give you rest..Even after that.

Even after all that talking back to God about him or her /this and that… He come to us and says peace be with you

Even after making immature decisions time and time again He comes and says come like newborn and desire for the pure spiritual milk and that by it you may grow up into salvation.

When God came to Solomon it showed me that purpose does not require perfection. That is why in Philippines 1: 6 it says “ And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work within you, will continue his work in you until the day of Christ Jesus. Solomon followed instructions EXCEPT in this area.

We are not going to leave Solomon out here alone everyone under the sound of my voice has an EXCEPT.

Your EXCEPT might not be my EXCEPT but everybody has an EXCEPT some where in your life. I will do roll call if I have to.

*You might not club hop anymore but you still have a wondering eye

*You didn’t have babies out of wedlock but one the biggest gossiper in town

*You might take a sip anymore but you quick to into that unmarried bed.

Y*ou speak in tongues on Sunday but lie on your taxes on Monday.

*You serve faithfully in church but will backbite every chance you get.

*You left that church to join another church but every chance you get you back to that church carry a bone. Do I need to keep calling roll? or can we admitt we all have an EXCEPT Everybody from the pulpit to the parking lot has an EXCEPT.

We all have an area or areas that are not in align with God’s instructions. Just like God came to an imperfect man like Solomon and asked him “what do you want?” He is asking you today what do you want in spite of your EXCEPT.

He knows you are not perfect…but what do you want. God does not define the sum total your worth based on your EXCEPT.

Church folks may judge you by your EXCEPT but kingdom minded folks will say in-spite God loves you son…In spite of God loves your daughter. Gods word says he is not defining you by your EXCEPT “What do you want me to give you in spite of your EXCEPT. Just like he asked Solomon He is asking you to ask for something you can only get from heaven.

P2P If God asked you what do you want? Would you start talking about your Except or the desires of your heart?

*Would you keep living in past after Christ has set you free? Will you keep mourning the lose of that relationship he never told you to be in.

Most people can’t view themselves right because they are comparing their EXCEPT to someone else. You will never know what you want and who you are to be in Christ being obsessed with who someone else is. That is why some need to spending so much of their time on Insta Gram, Face Fiction and Snap chat because one can become distracted and obsessed with what other’s are doing that they miss God’s voice when He ask “what do you want?”

Solomon was given everything but asked for wisdom, an obedient heart and to discern good from evil that let’s us know Solomon was trying to correct his EXCEPT. One of the ways to correct our EXCEPTS is to ask for wisdom.

Wisdom-Is the proper use of knowledge. It doesn’t do you any good to know something if you don’t apply it properly.Just because you here something in church, you highlight your bible that doesn’t necessary mean you are applying that scripture correctly to your life.

The bible says we should not just hear the word of God but be doers of the word of God. What will your answer be to God be in spite of your EXCEPT? Voice

Will you ask for knowledge and understanding?

Will you ask for insight to be wise and make the most of every opportunity because the days are evil?

Will you ask to be slow to speak and quick to hear?

Will you ask like Apostle Paul my purpose is to know the Lord in the power of his resurrection?

Will you declare-Lord give me wisdom over Gold!

Will you declare the one who gets wisdom loves life and the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.

Will you say Lord I don’t want to deceive myself by thinking I am wiser by the standards of this age!

Will you say Lord guard my lips to preserve my life!

Will you say Lord teach me to number my days!

Will you say Lord fools find no pleasure in understanding and I don’t want to be a fool!

Will you say Lord give me a wise heart to accept your commands!

Will you say Lord many are called but few are chosen! I want to be used by your Lord!

Will you say Lord whoever is patient has great understanding!

Will you say Lord I want to walk with the wise because the companion of fools suffers harm!

Will you say Lord your law is perfect and refreshing to my soul!

Will you say Lord I want to be saved, set free and delivered! What will you say when the Lords say what do you want in spite of your EXCEPT?

Very quickly I want to share a few observation from reading the dialogue between God and Solomon

1. Solomon thank God for what he was given.

Verse 6 Says Solomon replied, You have shown great and faithful love to Your servant, my father David because he walked before You in faithfulness, righteousness, and integrity. You have continued this great and faithful love for him by giving him a son to sit on his throne, as it is today. The bible say’s Oh give thanks to the lord, for he is good for His steadfast love endures forever. Can we be thankful for what we have already been given. God has already given us everything we need pertaining to life and Godliness.

2. Solomon was humble he acknowledged his EXCEPT.

Verse 7 says Now, O Lord my God, you have made me king but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way. Humility describes a character trait that properly and accurately assessed oneself, especially in light of one’s sinfulness. Humility is also a virtue that requires modest self-perception. *Can we be like Solomon and say Lord you have blessed me with a wife now I need wisdom to love her the way Christ loved the Church.

*Can we be like Solomon and say Lord you blessed me with a Godly husband will you give me wisdom to submit until him and he submittts unto you.

*Can we be like Solomon and say Lord you blessed me with children now I need wisdom to train them up in the way they should go. Can we be like Solomon Lord you blessed me with resources now provide me wisdom to when and where to plant seeds.

3. God granted the desires of Solomons heart.

verse 11 says So God replied, Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies. I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! Did you catch what God was putting down. He said No one has had or will have your blessings. Your blessing is unique to you. In other words when you ask for wisdom not selfish gain it’s some other things that come with wisdom you will not have to ask for. Wisdom will go get what you were trying to get. Solomon never had to pray amiss for resources or material things. Wisdom and a pure heart did that. Have you ever a blessing just jump on you....come find you that is what wisdom will do.

Don’t ask with wrong motives

In Conclusion

The bible says many are called but only a few are chosen. That indicates only a few answered when ABBA father asked “What do you want?” In spite of your EXCEPT.

This time when ABBA calls will you drop doing things your way? This time when ABBA calls will you come out of company with depression? Will you come out of company with doubled minded ways? Will you come out of company with generational bad decision making? Your son needs you, your daughter needs you, your spouse needs you, the body of Christ needs you to answer in spite of your EXCEPT.

We learned in 1 Kings chapter 3 Solomon is given responsibility to Kingship. And God says listen I am pleased with you ask me for whatever you want in spite of your EXCEPT. When God gives an invitation like that it is because He knows he can trust the heart of the person that they will not ask for anything that will be out of His will. Solomon understood the assignment was bigger than him so he asked for wisdom to lead God’s people. When is the last time we asked for wisdom to lead our homes, to lead on our jobs, to lead in ministry?

Gone are the days that Sunday service serves as one meal and we are empty by next week.

Father God I am believing you to give everyone under the sound of my voice supernatural wisdom. God may your people know in this moment you are talking to them. ABBA Father I pray over us the pray that Solomon prayed Give us wisdom in spite of our EXCEPT…you said in James 1 if we ask liberally…I pray for a liberal portion of wisdom in Jesus name.
