Hey all, its good to be back and refreshed in the Spirit. Man, I will admit that I struggled with John 8 for a long time and I don’t claim that I know it all, but I do know that what the Spirit has given, it has shed some light on things. So quick review, where and when are we in John 8, what’s happened so far?
Great and now, we are coming to the end of the festival of Sukkot and they would light the giant Menorah in the temple at this point, this is why we see Jesus leading in with verse 12
John 8:12 NIV
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Pray
Josephus on the Menorah - light up all of Jerusalem. Jesus is saying, well you think that cool, let me tell you about real light. The light that doesn’t just push back the shadows but the Light that brings life!

The Light

John 8:12 NIV
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
A. The Light of the World
1. Where does this take your mind?
a. Beginning
Genesis 1:1–4 NASB95
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.
b. God created light and darkness
c. Had to separate them
i. Light and darkness are separate
ii. We walk in one or the other period, we cannot walk in both
2. Light of life
a. Zeo vs the Bios
b. Again proving the theology of Spirit vs Physical
c. Jesus wants us to have spiritual life, everlasting life, not just physical life
i. everyone gets physical life
ii. Have to choose spiritual life
John 1:4 NASB95
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.

Your Own Witness

John 8:13 NIV
The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”
A. Blatant misleading
1. Who else testifies about Jesus?
John 5:31–33 NASB95
“If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. “There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true. “You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.
a. But there is another as well, who?
i. Father
ii. Jesus will address that as well
b. Jesus obeyed the Law perfectly
i. He opened no weakness for their argument
ii. Why they could never find fault in Him
2. But where does this come from?
Deuteronomy 17:6 NASB95
“On the evidence of two witnesses or three witnesses, he who is to die shall be put to death; he shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness.
Deuteronomy 19:15 NASB95
“A single witness shall not rise up against a man on account of any iniquity or any sin which he has committed; on the evidence of two or three witnesses a matter shall be confirmed.
a. First it had to due with accusation but they misconstrued it
b. Funny how the darkness comes after the light, but it cannot over come it
B. Jesus Response
John 8:14–18 NIV
Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true. I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”
1. Jesus points out the Truth
a. Testify on His behalf because he is God
i. Knows where He comes from
ii. Knows where He is going
b. These people speak to only their senses and what they know
i. Remember at this time they have relatively no idea how conception works, in the womb
ii. They have no idea about death for the most part
c. Jesus does know
2. He Judges rightly
John 8:15–16 NIV
You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.
a. Not that He won’t judge
i. But now is not the time
ii. He came for salvation’s sake
iii. There is a judgement coming, but it is not now
b. But His judgement is righteous because he is not alone
i. The Father is with Him
ii. Trinitarian doctrine
3. Deeper than that
John 8:18–20 NASB95
“I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” So they were saying to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
a. Trying to get them to see the Spiritual
b. It is going to become evident soon, who He is
c. He is desperately and gently leading them upward toward the Father
