Introduction
We are taking a break from Michah
We will look at What is the “unworthy manner”
We will then look at Paul’s Answer to them and His Application of his teaching
17 But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse.
18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it.
19 For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you.
20 Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper,
21 for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk.
22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I will not praise you.
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.
28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.
30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep.
31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged.
32 But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.
33 So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
34 If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you will not come together for judgment. The remaining matters I will arrange when I come.
What is the “unworthy manner” in verse 27?
What is the “unworthy manner” in verse 27?
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.
Many people have taken this unworthy manner and made it into many different things. sin, practice, etc.
The Bible is clear, we but we cannot cherry pick verses.
Paul says here that he does not praise them for their actions
17 But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse.
Their actions are described as not “worthy” of the seriousness of the supper (v. 27)
The consequences of these actions resulted in some of them even becoming sick, weak, and even dying.
30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep.
What were they doing so to receive such harsh words from the Apostle Paul?
First there are divisions and factions among them (v. 18-19)
18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it.
Divisions σχισμα - these are general disagreements in the church, 1:10, 11:18; 12:25
19 For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you.
Factions αἵρεσις is a word Used in the new testament for a false teaching. This is where we get our word for Heresy.
Their practices and actions at the Lord’s Table was causing divisions and described by Paul as a FALSE teaching!
Second, when they gather, they are calling it the Lord’s Supper, but they are not eating the Lords supper according to Paul.
20 Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper,
21 for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk.
They have turned the Lord’s Supper in to their own supper!
They are glorifying themselves by getting drunk and while some are getting drunk and full, others go away hungry.
Third, They are despising the Church and are shaming those who are in it that are poor!
22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I will not praise you.
Literally they despise the “gathering”
Literally “the ones who do not have”
These are the poor. They could not afford the expensive wine nor the fancy bread.
With the mention of houses in this verse, these people could have very well been homeless.
Because of this they were being excluded from the table and going away hungry!
In the mean time the rich were having their fill on the Lord’s Supper.
This is what the unworthy manner is from verse 27.
It was not by undervaluing the supper
it was not by taking it in a certain way
it was by not showing love in the action of it.
Paul is so upset with them they he is at a loss for words! (22)
DO NOT BE AFRAID OF COMMUNION
IT IS FOR YOU (24-25)
DO not listen to anyone say that you are unworthy…WE ALL ARE
IT is the very blood that we celebrate that washes us and brings us near to Christ
Without the blood you are only worthy of Hell
With the blood you escape hell!
If you cant accept the physical blood how can you accept the spiritual blood?
Paul’s Answer: The Meaning of The Lord’s Supper
Paul’s Answer: The Meaning of The Lord’s Supper
Paul decided to ground them in the Word.
This is the best answer for a church or a Christian off the tracks, they need to restore their foundation in the Word.
He received these words from the Lord Himself. (23)
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;
Paul emphasizes the love of Jesus at the first Supper
First, Jesus did this the night he was betrayed.
it was not a drunken celebration where some were denied and others allowed based on favoritism and factions.
NO, Jesus even gave the Supper to Judas.
This was his meal of departure, showing his love for the world
Second, He gave his bread to others.
His bread was not to be guarded and selfishly kept for himself.
NO he tells us this is MY BODY, not only will i give my bread, but i will give my BODY for you
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
This was a selfless expression
28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
this bread is FOR YOU.
25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
He took the cup also and said this is the New covenant in MY BLOOD.
This BLOOD is FOR YOU.
He will even share his blood. His life in Heb culture. The most important thing that anyone possesses.
This is the opposite of the Corinthians greed
Third, the Lord’s Supper was not given for their own gluttonous pleasure but for a remembrance of Christ and his word.
The Lord’s Supper is not for once a year.
The Lord’s Supper is not for you to get a snack in church.
IT IS FOR REMEMBRANCE OF CHRIST
Fourth, this meal is not a present meal, but a meal that we will only eat for the time being.
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
This is not a present time to get full, but a time to prepare for the return of Christ.
This MEAL is abused when people are denied
This blood and this body is for all
Paul’s Application: Love
Paul’s Application: Love
Paul’s answer to the Corinthians was that they remember the LOVE of Jesus expressed through the meal.
1 Cor 13. is the Love chapter spoken in this context along with spiritual gifts
How are they to be loving?
First, Examine themselves
28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
1 Cor 11:29 “29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.”
1 Cor 11:30 “30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep.”
31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged.
Second, by waiting for one another (v. 29)
33 So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
We are to do all things in love as a church
