That You May Know: (Part Two) This is the Message: (1 John 1:5-2:2)
The Sermon Idea: Without directly confronting the false teachers, John announces his
overall message, That God is Light and in Him there is no darkness at all.
And then
contrasts the practice of walking in the truth, with the pattern of walking in the darkness.
God is Light: In Scripture the contrast between light and darkness applies to three main
spheres:
1. Intellectually: Light is Truth: Darkness is Lies.
2. Morally: Light is Purity or Holiness: Darkness is Evil or Unrighteousness.
3. Regeneratively: Light is Life and Sight: Darkness is Death and Blindness.
John Stott: “We are to think of God as a personal being, infinite in all His perfections,
transcendent, the high and lofty One, He who lives forever, whose name is holy, yet He
desires to be known and has revealed Himself.”

Patterns of Sin: (vs.
6-9) “If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet
walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”

That Man is More Righteous Than He is; and That God is Less Holy Than
He is: (vs.
10-2:2) “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and
His word is not in us.”
