TEXT: Matthew 14:22-32
I. Fear
A. Fear of the known
1. Storm, Waves, Wind, Water
2. Without Jesus
B. Fear of the unknown
1. Saw the Spirit walking on the water
2. Afraid of what might happen
3. Afraid of what could happen
4. Some are afraid of
a) Death
b) Darkness
c) Despair
d) Demons
e) Disease
f) Finance
g) Failure!! We are going to fail but------
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
h) People
i) Problems
j) Persecution
C. Without Jesus there is much to fear
D. With Jesus there is nothing to fear
1. There are 365 Fear Nots in the Bible
Psalms 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
II. Faith
A. Jesus said one word “Come”
1. No explanation of how
B. Faith is stepping out on the water
1. He had never done this before
2. Some here may need to step out on the water
a) Never lived a consistent, dedicated Christian life
b) Never lived a sold out spirit led life
c) Need to step out on faith and say I have never lived a year for Jesus but I am going to now
C. Have to get out of the boat first
1. You will never walk on the water until you get out of the boat
2. Many people live in a state of fear.
a) They are afraid of what is on the water
b) They are afraid of what is in the water
3. Peter jumped out of the boat and started walking on the water
a) He had never done this before
b) Had to get out of the boat to walk on the water
c) Didn’t just ease out on the water
d) Didn’t hang on the side of the boat
D. State of Faith is
1. Knowing that you will be with Jesus
a) Despite the Obstacles
b) Despite the ridicule
2. Stepping out on the Word “Come”
3. Hebrews 11 Heroes of Faith
a) Abel (Obeyed God with offering)
b) Noah (Never Rained)
c) Abraham wealthy businessman (God said go)
d) Moses
4. Jesus supplies the support when we step out on faith
III. Failure
A. Peter was doing the undoable, the supernatural
1. He was walking on the water by faith
2. Faith is continuing not a one time thing
B. Peter took his mind off Jesus
1. He began to focus on the water
2. When we look at the circumstances instead of Jesus we will fail
C. You will not fail as long as you keep your focus on Jesus
D. We all have failed
1. Don’t stay there
2. Don’t move there
3. Pack up and move out
IV. Fellowship
A. Walked with Jesus
1. Hand in hand
2. Jesus reached down and lifted him up
3. Jesus reaches down to lift you up if you have failed
B. Going his way
C. Going to the same place
D. Man broke fellowship with God
1. Adam and Eve
2. God was the one who made the move to restore that fellowship
