Intro:

HOW MANY people here today WANT GOD’S BLESSING on their life?
***Raise hands
I’m NOT going to PROMISE you MONEY or HEALTH, this isn’t a prosperity gospel thing...
SCRIPTURAL EXAMPLES....GOD’S BLESSING = CONDITIONAL
SALVATION = NOT CONDITIONAL (WORKS). BY FAITH ALONE.
BUT, SOME BLESSINGS = CONDITIONAL
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE...MATTHEW 5 BEATITUDES
BUT TODAY - PSALM 1 “BLESSED MAN/WOMAN” VS. WICKED MAN.

Background:

PSALMS = HEBREW POETRY.
ISRAEL’S HYMNAL…BOOK of WORSHIP
PSALM 1 CHOSEN INTRO to the entire PSALTER
R.E.O. WHITE (PSALM 1)- “the deliberate choice of the way of the Lord is the necessary precondition of all true worship.” ---White, R. E. O. (1995). Psalms. In Evangelical Commentary on the Bible (Vol. 3, p. 374). Baker Book House.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Psalm 1:1–6 ESV
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Text: (Psalm 1:1-6)

The Blessed Man
Psalm 1:1 ESV
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
OPENS “BLESSED” - LIKE MATTHEW 5
BLESSED = PRIVILEGED, FORTUNATE, HAPPY
HEBREW...BAD INFLUENCES - SUBSTANTIVE USE OF ADJECTIVE. -WHO THEY ARE.
WICKED, SINNERS, SCOFFERS
AVOID THINKING, BEHAVING, FELLOWSHIP w/ GODLESS
MAN’S ACTIVITY = SUMMARIZES his LIFE/COMPLETED…(HEBREW PERFECT CONJUGATION)
Psalm 1:2 ESV
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
LOOK at how the psalmist CONTRASTS these behaviors.
NOT of SPENDING TIME with UNGODLY people, the blessed man SPENDS his TIME devoted to GOD’S WORD.
MEDITATES = ONGOING (IMPERFECT CONJUGATION)
MEDITATE = MORE THAN THINK, TO MUTTER/MURMUR.
MEDITATING = READING ALOUD!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MOSES’ COMMISSION :
Deuteronomy 28:1 (ESV)
1 “And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.
AFTER MOSES DESCRIBES CURSES…1ST MENTION OF BLESSING = TIED TO THE WORD.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SIMILAR, JOSHUA’S COMMISSION (BY GOD):
Joshua 1:8 (ESV)
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
GOD’S AUTHORITY GIVEN to his WORD
OT LAW ---NEW TESTAMENT = WHOLE COUNCIL
OBEDIENCE NOT LEGALISM…GOD (HEAVENLY FATHER) KNOWS BEST
BEST - BE DILIGENT/CAREFUL TO OBEY.
****Story about the elimination diet, being careful to do things.
STILL HARD TO TURN DOWN FOOD THAT HURTS! - KNOWING CONSEQUENCES...
HOW OFTEN SPIRITUALLY?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE MAN WHO MEDITATES IS LIKE THIS:
Psalm 1:3 ESV
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
PLANTED = PASSIVE…DONE BY GOD.
FRUITFULNESS COMES from GOD.
PROSPERS is a hiphil - causes to prosper.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BLESSED MAN:
TURNS AWAY UNGODLY INFLUENCES
SPENDS TIME IN GOD’S WORD
BLESSING FOLLOWS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ON THE CONTRARY:
2. Section 2: Psalm 1:4-5 (The Wicked Man)
Psalm 1:4 ESV
4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
2 TYPES OF PEOPLE…BLESSED & WICKED.
NO GRAY AREAS.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WICKED = NO FOUNDATION
BLESSED MAN = PLANTED TREE
WICKED MAN = CHAFF
***SEE PICTURE
GRAIN - BUNDLE (SHEAVES) - THRESHING (FLOOR)----WINNOW.
WINNOWING = SEPARATE WHEAT FROM CHAFF
USE FORK/SHOVEL....TOSS IN SKY. CHAFF BLOWN OFF.
***METAPHOR FOR SEPARATION
CHAFF VS. PLANTED TREE.....
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Psalm 1:5 ESV
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
***NOTE THEREFORE
Psalm 1:6 ESV
6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
LORD “CONTINUALLY” KNOWS WAY of the RIGHTEOUS (PARTICIPLE)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CONCLUSION: 1 NT PASSAGE
APOSTLE PAUL is WRITING to TIMOTHY = SPIRITUAL SON
LAST LETTER (BEFORE DEATH) = SIGNIFICANT
AFTER WARNS OF DECEIVERS…ADMONISHES REMAIN IN FAITH:
2 Timothy 3:14–17 ESV
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
CONCERNING OT
BUT NT APPLIES JUST AS MUCH.
GOD’S BLESSING IS ON HIS WORD!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Application:
1. EXAMINE your LIFE and see who your PRIMARY INFLUENCES are. GODLY VS. UNGODLY
2. SPEND TIME in GOD’S WORD. (?START IN JOHN?)
3. SLOW, MEDITATE ETC. ----READ ALOUD. PONDER.
Find a passage or verse that means a lot to you and commit it to memory so you can dwell on it.
Isaiah 26:3, Phil 4:8
