2 Timothy 2

Background
Paul has been captured by the Romans and he is about to be executed and many of his friends in the faith have abondaned him
Timothy In Ephisis
One thing I love about Timothy is it gives us insight into true decipleship
Timothy was called brother, he traveled with Paul on speaking engagements, He was expected to become a leader in the faith. Timothy had traveled with Paul on two other engagements before 2 Timothy
2:1 I love how they greet one another in the Bible
Be Strong in Grace - How can you be strong in grace?
Word here is endunamou which means “be empowered” or “be strengthened” implying being helped by someone else. Grace meaning underserved favor. He was reminding Timothy his strength comes from Christ not from himself
2:3 Share in suffering like a good soldier of Christ Jesus
fatigue and deprivation that soldier faces
A Soldier? Yes, we are expected to be soldiers for Christ. Soldiers are expected to endure, to have purpose, bravery and obedience. They loose personal autonomy. They can expect hardship.
2:4 No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs
Paul is giving him direction and a sense of purpose. When decipling one another we need to make sure we provide these items. Don’t let anything get in the way of your mission. Really he is saying don’t get wrapped up in things not in line with your mission for Christ.
Business, serving, volunteering, home projects, other ministries. Timothy’s purpose was to preach.
2:5 no one is crowned without competing
He wasn;t saying its ok if you loose. He was saying if you win or loose it depends totally on how you play the game.
2:6 hard working farmer
Examples used: 1 Soldier 2 athlete 3 farmer - they all have to persevere to the end
2:7 think over
We need to contemplate what we learn and meditate on it for the Lord will give us understanding.
2:8 Remember what Christ did
We should always point people back to Christ and looked what he did. Endured to the end! He loved everyone and preached the truth. Just look at Jesus
2:9 the word of God is not chained
the word is a live it transends any circumstance you find your self it. The word of God can not be chained down so if you preach it keeps going!
2:11
2:13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself
Humans fail but the very nature of God is faithfulness; God is faithful to His promises. He will never turn His back on us
2:14 quarreling about words; it is of no value and only ruins those who listen.
Don’t argue about unimportant details
Don’t discuss foolishness
These are signs of false teachers - they will create issues and strife over meaningless details. (if a person is like this that is nitpicking details the leaders should address the person). People focus on their own ideals instead of the scriptures.
2:15 be diligent
Does not mean working hard but zealous in ehtical responsibilities.
2:16 Avoid Godless chatter
avoid bickering long hours over words and theories not central to the word of God
2:17 among them Hymenaeus and Phietus
Paul handed these men over to Satan 1 Timothy 1:20 by putting them out of the Church; their false teachings were destroying the church
2:19
2:20 gold and silver but also of wood and clay utensils
useful and non-useful works will be found in the house of God.
2:21 ones who clean
2:22 Flee also youthful lust
2:23
