My name is Trey Fisher and I am the Pastor at The Parish of The Redeemer, here in Louisiana.
I want to start this debate off with 1 Timothy 1:5
1 Timothy 1:5 ESV
The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
Marlon, I want to thank you for asking me to be part of this.
Travis, thanks for the special edition of your show you did on me and Jeremiah this past Friday.
A little background on me:
I was in the Church of Christ for 18 years. I have family from all sides in every direction that was in or still in the Church of Christ.
I taught in the Church of Christ, I preached in the Church of Christ…I baptized people in ponds, ditches, baptistries, swimming pools, you name it.
I shared with and baptized a Baptist preacher in a lake one night.
When we built our house we had a 2 acre pond put on our property that we called “the grave yard”… with like a huge light that lit the whole thing up so if someone needed to be baptized at 2:30AM…there was a place for it.
I tell you that so you know I know what the CoC believes.
I also tell you all of that to let you know I absolutely love the people in the Church of Christ.
They are my people...
Let me tell you how this debate is going to go tonight.
Travis has done many debates (this is my first one).
Travis debated Matt Slick and I suggest you all go watch that debate he had with Matt Slick.
Let me be clear…there is nothing theologically I can tell Travis tonight that Matt Slick did not tell him.
NOW...Travis, and those like him (like I use to be) is not concerned about the context of Scripture.
Context means nothing to them ALTHOUGH they say it does…they have to say that…you have to speak the Christian language.
but, he doesn’t care about the context
So…since I know that, I am not going to waste time tonight giving him context…I AM GOING TO HOLD HIM TO HIS OWN STANDARDS
And you will see just how much of the Bible he really believes.
You will see his contradictions and his slight of hand tricks.
This system of beliefs are built on “PROOF TEXTS” and “WORD GAMES”.
Im going to show you whats behind the curtain and I pray you do some serious studying on your own.
I said “yes” to this one because it is a moderated debate…organized and Im not on someone’s show just arguing over words.
I have turned down 2 offers to come on a CoC preachers YouTube channel to discuss these things but I refused because they would answer some simple questions.
And, because I know … and they know…the tricks of manipulating Bible verses, not taking into account context of Scripture and redefining Biblical words to “peddle” the gospel, I wouldn’t do it because it would only confuse everyone who listened.
it would confuse them because we would both be saying the same Biblical words but we would have two different meanings.
You’ll see what I am talking about real soon.
2 Timothy 2:14…says:
2 Timothy 2:14 ESV
Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers.
Listen to me…carefully...
There are many people sitting in the Church of Christ who are God’s people…I am talking to you.
You know something isn’t sitting well with you and your right.
You read God’s Word and things are just not making sense with what you’ve been taught your whole life...
BUT...
You know if you ask that question it probably isn’t going to go well...
so…you just try to get over it…and forget about it.
You have worked so hard to get to the position you are in at the church
But if people really knew you...
so you put that smile on...
You know that if you left the CoC you would lose family,
friends…your title…your community...
I get it...
You are sitting there questioning if you are truly saved or not…
“do you need to be baptized again?”
It is miserable. I know it…I’ve been there.
My wife and I been there. (who I met at Harding by the way)
Let me warn youthere is a price to pay when you leave the CoC… and come to Christ Alone in Faith Alone....
My wife and I…and our kids have paid it...
I have many friends who have paid that price...
And I have been able to talk to so many of you out there who have paid it as well...
and those who are about to pay it.
Let me encourage you:
Philippians 3:7–9 ESV
But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—
Christ is worth it ALL…I PROMISE YOU HE IS WORTH IT ALL.
Now…WE ARE ABOUT TO PLAY SOME WORD GAMES SO LET ME END WITH THIS...
ROLL TAPE OF TRAVIS SAYING THAT “WORDS HAVE MEANINGS FRIENDS”
