Who- Christ

If you don’t get this right, the rest of the commission really doesn’t matter. In other words, if this commission has nothing to do with you, then the content of it is not quite as applicable. To whom is Christ speaking? He is talking to the disciples. But, can we get more specific than that (because at the broadest sense a disciple is a believer or a follower/learner)?

There are three types of followers of Christ:

Curious disciples

Convinceddisciples

Committeddisciples This text (Matt 28:18-20) is for every committed follower of Christ. If you say that you are a committed follower of Christ, then yours is the Great Commission.

How do we know this isn’t given to the local church as an entity? When does the Church formulate in the Bible? Acts 2. This isn’t to say that it isn’t the Church’s responsibility, but that it is first and foremost every believer’s responsibility.

This is important because “everyone’s responsibility is no one’s responsibility.” Robert Coleman once said, “What was always intended to become a people’s movement has become a pastor’s movement.” The rest of the church is supposed to come to church, pray, and give money.
