One of the most destructive and difficult spirits to deal with is the spirit of pride.
The spirit of pride is so ingenious and so illusive, it will deceive even the most astute Christian into the postponing of its destruction.
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
Conformed but transformed
through the grace
every man - human
We all have a nature that makes us think that we don’t have flaws
Most of us despise A revealing that you have a flaw
failures
shortcomings
A position of meekness could be a false humility.
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
When have you have victories in life, it’s easy to let everyone know how you conquered - but when you have failures who do you tell - who do you ask to pray for you to have victory over those shortcomings?
When was the last time you let someone know about a flaw that you have and for which you are seeking healing
Testimony time - confession of faults
A disposition of confession and humility is vital if we will find healing
Do we ever:
Catch ourselves being cold and indifferent at church
Catch ourself being judging or arrogant and we apologize to those we’ve hurt
A word that we say that is unkind or harsh/rude and when the Holy Spirit pricks our heart we apologize to those that are effected
10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
The master - degrees, titles
He’s talking to his disciples about humility
The way up is down, the way down is up
24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.
You know I have more talents than you
You know I can lead better
You know I have more knowledge
You know God has given me more gifts
You know I’m a better preacher
You know I’m a better teacher
37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
Our position is humility at the foot of the cross cognizant that all glory and praise belongs to Christ
Don’t believe how wonderful everyone says are
46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
Took a child - he that is greatest is the least among us
Whoever is the least among us -
the one we think is the greatest is not the greatest
forbid him not - he that is not against us is for us
Our heart
Discussion, debate, strife
Imagine being in the presence of the Lord of Glory
41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.
42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:
44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
The chiefest will be the servant
25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.
26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
Be as the younger
Be the servant
1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
He dealt with pride, humility, serving the last meal He had with them
Jesus must deal with arrogant, elevated, proud
In a normal setting in this time period there would be servants
Jesus knew there would be no one to wash the feet
No disciple had offered to wash the feet
someone has been delegated
We see something that needs to be done and we think someone should do that - someone should take care of that
The picture of the ultimate act of humility and service
They had observed the Lord’s supper table
The servants
Menial slaves
under that there were those who washed the feet
Happy are ye when you do them
Displayed His Mission
Taught His real character
Humble love was expressed by washing His disciples feet
Wearing the towel was
Our Lord was willing to do the most base things
The High calling is the low service
Why doesn’t anyone else do this job
What is the lesson - Jesus was willing to do the lowest job
the disgusting job
the dirty job
The servant is not greater than the Master
We are called to serve
We must be willing to do the lowest, most disgusting jobs
There is no job that is beneath you
We are called to be Christ’s ambassadors
We are commanded to walk in His steps
We represent His will
His Way
I. A Spirit of Pride desires to show in public what should be kept in secret.
You don’t need to tell everyone
Let your light so shine among men
but you want glory
II. A Spirit of Pride desires to talk about self too much
III. A spirit of pride desires to talk when one should be quiet
We don’t have to talk sometimes
Just listen
IV. Pride causes you to care too much what others think
V. Pride causes you to care too little what others think
I don’t care
VI. Pride causes you to avoid facing and admitting failures, sin, weakness, and shortcomings
VII. Pride causes us to struggle when another person experience blessings.
Why don’t I have what that person has
You are not entitled to anything
VIII. Pride causes us to think we deserve more than what God has given us.
What do we deserve, really?
IX. Pride causes us to be more position desirous than submitted.
We are fellow servants
Co[laborers
X. Pride causes us to control and delegate
Manipulate, guilt, control
The spirit of pride is antiChrist
Reject the spirit of Pride, it is antichrist
Perform kind actions to the person you can’t stand
you must love the person you don’t like
gift
love
Jesus washing the feet was the greatest act of service and the greatest proof of leadership
He bowed himself
A look of pride is rejected by the Lord Jesus Christ
If God spoke to you, deal with it at the alter
