Intro

Slave: A doulos in greek, often translated as slave, bondservant, or bondman in English could refer to several different social classes of people in Roman society. There were those conscripted into slavery through war. There were also those for whom slavery was a punishment levied by the magistrates in response to a crime. There were also those who sold themselves into slavery for whatever reason (perhaps to pay off a debt). There were yet others who became slaves by choice simply because they loved a master and wanted to dedicate their lives to serving that person.
This class does not really exist in Western society today so the true meaning of the word can be difficult for us to wrap our minds around. Perhaps the best modern understanding for a doulos would be the relationship between an employer and an employee.
How we work and serve matters. The attitude we carry at work matters. We demonstrate our loyalty to Christ by serving our earthly masters well, and by doing so we practice the discipline of obedience to Christ.
