Confession of Faith

I am not moved by what I see or by what I feel. I am moved by what I believe. I believe the WORD of God! The victory is mine! I have it now! I can see it through the eyes of my faith! In Jesus Name

Intro:
Today we see in the scriptures Jesus teaching his disciples about wealth, materialism and service!
In verses Matthew 6:19-20 Jesus is teaching about
treasures or earthly riches verses heavenly treasures
Then in verse 21 he says
Matthew 6:21 NLT
21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
Where your treasures are - what’s important to you is where your heart will be
Where are your thoughts? What do you think about!
Are your thoughts about earth or are the more focused on heaven!
In other words are you think more about earthly things or are you thinking more about God!
Jesus was talking with his disciples and letting them know that we must be careful to protect our minds
We must be careful to guard centering our lives on material things!
Watch out when your main focus is on house, cars, expensive clothing and jewelry, your retirement portfolio, investments - your land and buildings
The reason is that nothing on this earth is secure and lasting!
Everything is aging , decaying and wasting away!
Jesus was letting his disciples know - this is all temporary!
Jesus wants our lives to be centered on him and heaven!
Everything about Jesus is secure and is real life!
Everything about Jesus is permanent and eternal!
So to stir our thinking today - Jesus gives us some lessons on wealth and materialism!

Two Types Of Riches

Matthew 6:19–20 NLT
19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
Treasure Number 1
Earthly Riches
These are the things that we all desire here on earth!
Jesus says those are earthly riches
You know
the cars,
the clothes,
the jewelry
the house
the pleasures
the fame
the money
He is describing anything that dominates your life and ties it down to this earth!
Here me now
A treasure is that thing which has value and is worth something to someone!
We take things and ascribe value to them
sneakers
crypto currency
money
land (property)
power or influence
fame or attention from other people
We see Jesus telling us some nuggets of critical importance
If all you do is focus on material possession - then your mind energy and efforts are given to temporary treasures
Our reality is that it is easier to go after earthly things
because we can see them and they can be touched
Most people on this earth are seeking earthly treasures - it’s what we hear and see all day long
but here is what the bible tells us
Romans 8:5–7 NCV
5 Those who live following their sinful selves think only about things that their sinful selves want. But those who live following the Spirit are thinking about the things the Spirit wants them to do. 6 If people’s thinking is controlled by the sinful self, there is death. But if their thinking is controlled by the Spirit, there is life and peace. 7 When people’s thinking is controlled by the sinful self, they are against God, because they refuse to obey God’s law and really are not even able to obey God’s law.
2. Things are only on this earth for a brief period of time! Everything has a seed of deterioration, and decay in it!
3. Earthly riches are insecure! Jesus tells us the can be stolen, they don’t last and you can’t take any of it with you when you die
1 Timothy 6:7 NKJV
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
1 Timothy 6:10 NKJV
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
James 5:3 NCV
3 Your gold and silver have rusted, and that rust will be a proof that you were wrong. It will eat your bodies like fire. You saved your treasure for the last days.
As I read the scripture - I want to share this with you
The first thing is Wealth is wanted by many folks! What we forget is that wealth is held by someone, So many of us are trying to figure out how to get what someone else already has!
This make things of the world very insecure
The second thing is you and I can be snatched from this earth in a twinkling of an eye! Everything you have worked for, worried about, manipulated people to get -can be gone immediately
Luke 12:16–21 NKJV
16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ 21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
The third thin - I want to share with you is We can lose much if not all of what we have in this world quickly! Financial problems, accidents, divorce or marital problems, illness, death and a myriad of other ways
The fourth thing is seeking an abundance of things - grasping after more and more God might say to you or I
Luke 12:20–21 NLT
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’ 21 “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”
The second type of is Heavenly Riches
Ephesians 1:3 NCV
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Christ, God has given us every spiritual blessing in the heavenly world.
The Gospel according to Matthew 1: Chapters 1:1–16:12 (King James Version) Q. The Warning about Wealth and Materialism, 6:19–24

Heavenly riches would be such things as …

• a blameless life

• becoming a true child of God

• the forgiveness of sins

• wisdom

• understanding the will of God (purpose, meaning, and significance in life)

• an enormous inheritance that is eternal

• a constant Comforter and Helper, the Holy Spirit of God Himself

• life that is abundant and overflowing

John 10:10 NKJV
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
Jesus tells us to lay up for yourself heavenly riches!
Go after the things that have meaning, purpose and significance to life!
Luke 12:15 NCV
15 Then Jesus said to them, “Be careful and guard against all kinds of greed. Life is not measured by how much one owns.”
Heavenly riches are incorruptible
2 Peter 1:4 The Living Bible
4 And by that same mighty power he has given us all the other rich and wonderful blessings he promised; for instance, the promise to save us from the lust and rottenness all around us, and to give us his own character.
1 Peter 1:4 NLT
4 and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.
Heavenly riches are secure - Thieves cannot break into heaven, Nobody can take away your heavenly riches
Romans 8:32–39 NLT
32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? 33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. 35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Jesus is not going to stop you or me from seeking what we call treasures! He is guiding you and Me to search for the real treasures! Heaven is worth more than all the wealth in the world
Matthew 16:26 NKJV
26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Mark 8:36 NKJV
36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
Luke 9:25 NKJV
25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?
Here’s the deal
You must leave all to follow Jesus
Luke 14:33 NKJV
33 So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.
But then he hit me with this
You must lay up treasures in heaven for your self -
Matthew 19:21 NKJV
21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
Luke 12:33 NCV
33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Get for yourselves purses that will not wear out, the treasure in heaven that never runs out, where thieves can’t steal and moths can’t destroy.
Philippians 3:8 NLT
8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ
