Psalm 61:1–4 NASB95
Hear my cry, O God; Give heed to my prayer. From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a refuge for me, A tower of strength against the enemy. Let me dwell in Your tent forever; Let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. Selah.

What is this Psalm about?

This is a prayer of security. A prayer where David expresses his confidence in God.
As people of God, we need to know that He has done enough and He is enough for us to have confidence in Him.
The NT calls this ‘boldness’!
David seeks security and knows that he can turn to God to get it!
Security is necessary becasue of the dangers to Christians may face. [Adversary, “roaring lion”, the world, evil ideologies, sin]

And we have this protection is Jesus. Anything that comes our way must pass through Jesus first Jn 10:9 “I am the door”

Now we just need to have the confidence like David had to turn to Him.
The same way He had confidence in God is the same way we can have confidence inJesus!

The Text

Ps 61:1Hear my cry, O God; Give heed to my prayer.” [synonymous parallelism]
Both verbs employ the use of Heb. imp. [great degree of desirability] expressing confidence in the making the request.
Confidence stems from these two places:
I know prayer works [APPL. I see it in the life of others and in my life]
I know God [APPL. You can’t fully trust what you don’t know]
Ps 61:2 “From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
This verse displays the confidence even more by highlighting David’s state
The Psalmist is either describing something physical or spiritual, he feels far from his God
[APPL. Sometimes when we feel far from God we need to shout harder and seek to draw closer]
There is no place too far that God cannot hear
[APPL. the magnitude of the problem never surpasses the magnitude of God’s power]
Ps 61:3 “For You have been a refuge for me, A tower of strength against the enemy.”
This part of the Psalm seems to be reflective on what God has done
[APPL. my past experience with God lays the foundation for confidence in the present and future]
As a result of all that God is, David says:
Ps 61:4 “Let me dwell in Your tent forever; Let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. Selah.”
Many times we think the victories, blessings, break-throughs are the main thing in our relationship with God.
This “let me” may be translated “I will”
But David’s reslove is to dwell in the presence of God. The “shelter” not only speaks to protection but COVENANT RELATIONSHIP.

This is only accessed in The Lord today.

Are you in relationship with Jesus? If not, why not change that status today?
