Share a story of hopelessness
What is hope?
An expectation or belief in the fulfillment of something desired (Oxford)
Biblical definition (Thayers) says hope in the bible is not normally expressed as desire (something good that one would like to have happen), but as a confident expectation (something good that one knows is going to hand, and, so anticipates)
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
or maybe in another version
1 Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.
Hope and faith are linked together, they are connected. When you think of Job, maybe you don’t think of hope, but you know hope is used 14 times in Job. But I have to be honest not all the times are the right kind of hope.
Job had hope in works Job4:3-6
3 “Behold you have admonished many, And you have strengthened weak hands. 4 “Your words have helped the tottering to stand, And you have strengthened feeble knees. 5 “But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; It touches you, and you are dismayed. 6 “Is not your fear of God your confidence, And the integrity of your ways your hope?
What about hope in things? Ps33:17
17 A horse is a false hope for victory; Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength.
OK, what about hope in others?
5 “Then they will be dismayed and ashamed because of Cush their hope and Egypt their boast.
What have you placed your hope on before? (give an illustration)
(Transition) I told you hope and faith are linked, connected so let me bring faith in now.
Job did not give up hope, nor should we
18 For the needy will not always be forgotten, Nor the hope of the afflicted perish forever.
Don’t give up on hope, real hope, not in works, not in things, not in people, but proper hope, properly placed will not fail.
Oh there are many verses in the bible that can give us hope, most well known is Jn3:16, but to fully understand and appreciate the hope we find in that verse we need to see in context
15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
See, our sin separates us from God. Jesus offers to bring us back into relationship with the Father through His own precious blood. Who gives us a hope of eternal life.
2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago,
God promised it, and it was made possible through the Son.
Eternal life that is filled with hope, faith, repentance and redemption
7 O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is lovingkindness, And with Him is abundant redemption.
Hope does not disappoint as noted in Rom5:1-8.
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.
3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;
5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
So, hope, we need it, it is provided so we can receive it, hold onto it until it is fulfilled.
Let Jesus carry us through hopeless times for Jesus is the God of all hope, and in whom we should have hope. For hope in Jesus leads to accepting the salvation, the redemption of our sins that He offers to us.
