Introduction- Romans 8:31-34
Last time we were here in the book of Romans, we considered the foreknowledge of God, predestination, justification, and glorification.
Tonight we will consider the fact that God is for us and the practical implications of this truth upon our progress toward the completion of our redemption.
When we think about our salvation and the time between our coming to Christ and the day when our redemption is finally complete there may be many doubts and questions that arise.
We may think to ourselves “But what if...” and finish the question with any number of scenarios.
In this passage a number of these questions are addressed and answered.
We may be concerned that there is something that we or someone else may do that would prevent our reaching this day of ultimate redemption but we will learn from this passage that we need not fear.
This section of the epistle centers around several important questions.
The first question is a simple but powerful one.
“If God be for us who can be against us?” (Vs.
31-32)
This question actually needs no answer for we know that there is nobody and nothing who can overcome or defeat God.
The question inherently implies that God is indeed for us and if this be the case there is noone who can stand against us.
One may question “How can we be sure that God is for us?”
The answer to this is provided in the verse that follows.
God spared not His own Son and this serves as the unquestionable proof that God is indeed for us.
If God was willing to surrender His own son as the means of our redemption, why should we doubt that He will ultimately bring it to fruition.
There may be any number of people who attempt to stand against us, but in the face of an omnipotent God they stand no chance at success.
We can be sure that Satan himself will also attempt to stand against us but we can confidently overcome his attacks because God is for us.
Ultimately there is not one person or entity that can stand against us because God is for us and will ultimately deliver us from them all.
This also leads to the truth that if He has given His Son for us, there is no good thing that He will withhold from us.
God will not withhold nor can anyone else withhold from us anything that would be for our good and for His glory.
In verse 33 another question is brought forward...
“Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect?”
This basically means who shall bring any accusation against those who are saved.
The answer is given simply in the statement “It is God that justifieth.”
If God has justified us then there is no one who can bring an accusation against us.
This does not mean that no one will try but their accusations are futile because we who have believed stand justified in God’s sight.
Satan is termed here as the accuser of the brethren and is pictured as one who would attempt to bring accusation against the saints.
One can easily imagine Satan pointing out our faults and our failures to God attempting to bring about our condemnation.
Yet no matter the accusation that men or Satan may bring against us we have already been declared righteous in God’s sight.
This is not the result of our own efforts but is the result of the transaction that took place when we placed our faith in Jesus Christ as savior and His righteousness was imputed to our account.
Who is it that can condemn us?
The answer is no one because Jesus Christ is died, arose, and is now at the right hand of God making intercession for us!
Is there anyone who would dare to argue against Jesus when He intercedes on our behalf.
Illustration- Jesus is our advocate- lawyer who represents us in the court of God’s justice and Satan is the prosecuting attorney.
The simple truth is that Jesus has never suffered a singular defeat and has cleared all those whom He has represented.
If we attempt to represent ourselves we would be making a terrible mistake for Satan will easily defeat us if we stand alone.
We will most certainly be declared guilty of the accusations he brings.
Conclusion
The wonderful conclusion of this section of the scripture is that we are secure in our salvation because there is no one who can overrule God and Jesus Christ.
We can be assured that what God has begun He will ultimately bring to completion.
There is no one that can come against us who can even begin to compete with the power of God.
There is no accuser who can condemn us because God has already justified us in Jesus Christ.
