The definition of hope

The word hope is easily understood through its synonyms rather than any clear definition.

The Hebrew words for hope come with the idea of to wait, to trust, to expect

The Greek words for hope have the idea of to expect

to wait on with expectation

The definition of Faith

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

so if faith is the evidence that allows us to wait with expectation (hope) then it is important to figure out what part hope plays within our lives

Where does our hope come from?

Jeremiah 29:11 'For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord , “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Hebrews 6:18-20 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

Our hope comes from the plans that God has for us as well as Jesus christ and the indwelling of the spirit. The curtain referred to is that which separates the holy of holies; and consequently the seat of mercy from the regular priest. This curtain is torn by the power of Christ’s sacrifice. Therefore we gain hope and expectation of entering into that holy of holies.

Therefore it is the sacrifice of Christ which provides us for a reason for the hope that is within us, since it is assured by the word of God.
