In Him (part 2): inheritance
In Him (part 2): inheritance
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
In Him (God)
Paul provides another reason God is worthy of Praise.
We have been chosen (v4-6)
We have been redeemed (7-10)
We have obtained an inheritance (v11)
will also provide a 4th reason...
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
If you are a Christian, then you are a THEOLOGIAN
I need to address you as theologians
We need to approach God’s word as theologians.
Ephesians 1:11 (ESV)
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
“we have obtained”
Who is the “we”
WE in verse 11 - Jewish people
reasoning...
so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
Who was the first to hope in Christ?
1st Christians were jewish converts
furthermore when you read verse 13
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
You also (Gentile Christians)
What is verse 11-14 about?
God’s process of dispersing grace described as an inheritance. First to the Jews and then the Gentiles.
God’s distribution of grace to the Jewish people.
How did God go about distributing His grace to the Jewish people?
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
they “obtained an inheritance”
inheritance = (adoption into His family)
Obtained - (def) obtain by lot
By no will or merit of themselves.
God CHOSE them to be His people.
Abram was living among pagans (idols)
God called him out, “Follow me and I will make you a great nation.”
But he wasn’t because of anything even Abram might have done … rather this inheritance came about because they had
been predestined
for ordained, predetermined
Why would God do it this way?
“According to the purpose of Him”
“who works all things according to His will”
3rd reason is the best of all
so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
God’s distribution of grace to gentile believers.
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
God could’ve stopped with providing an inheritance to the Jews and He would have been rightly worthy of praise!!!
But He didn’t stop there did He?!!!!!
He made it available to gentiles as well.
but it’s not a matter of our nationality
How did God make if available to us?
When you heard the truth
the gospel of your salvation
and believed in Him (Jesus)
You were sealed
with the promised Holy Spirit
(the Jews can point to the promise made to Abram. But what do we as Gentiles lean on?) WE ARE SEALED with the Holy Spirit.
who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
He is the guarantee of our inheritance.
Summerize Pauls message here...
God determined to offer unmerited grace to the Jews. He did council us. It was and is HIS to give, and he gave it according to His own will and purpose.
But He didn’t stop there. He also offered the same unmerited grace to gentile people. The Holy Spirit assures us that it there for us.
There some similarities in these two distributions of grace. (did you notice)
Jew inheritance (v11) >>> OUR inheritance (v13)
In both instances the purpose was the same
Ephesians 1:14 (ESV)
who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
“To the praise of his Glory”
