III. THE LORD JESUS CHRIST: His preexistence and deity (John 1:1-3), incarnation by virgin birth (John 1:14; Matt 1:18-23), sinless life (Heb 4:15), substitutionary death (II Cor 5:21), bodily resurrection (Luke 24:36-43),ascension into heaven and present
ministry (Heb 4:14-16), and coming again (Acts1:11). [Further Scriptural evidence of his pre-existence as God the Son is found in John 8:58; His deity, John 20:28 & I John 5:20; and His coming again John 14:3.]
Who is Jesus? He is the most important and controversial person in human history.
Kondratiy Selivanov (c. 1730s–1832), the founder and leader of the Skoptsy sect in the Russian Empire.[1]Ann Lee (1736–1784), the founder and leader of the Shakers. Lee's followers referred to her as "Mother", believing that she was the female incarnation of Christ on Earth.[2]

Mirza Ghulam Ahmad
John Nichols Thom (1799–1838), a Cornish tax rebel who claimed to be the "saviour of the world" and the reincarnation of Jesus Christ in 1834. He was killed by British soldiers at the Battle of Bossenden Wood, on 31 May 1838 in Kent, England.[3]
Arnold Potter (1804–1872), Schismatic Latter Day Saint leader; he claimed the spirit of Jesus Christ entered into his body and he became "Potter Christ" Son of the living God. He died in an attempt to "ascend into heaven" by jumping off a cliff. His body was later retrieved and buried by his followers.[4]
Bahá'u'lláh (1817–1892), born Shiite, adopted Bábism later in 1844,[5] he claimed to be the prophesied fulfillment and Promised One of major religions including Hinduism, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. He founded the Baháʼí Faith in 1863.[6] The Baháʼís believe that the fulfillment of the prophecies of the second coming of Jesus, as well as the prophecies of the 5th Buddha Maitreya and many other religious prophecies, were begun by the Báb in 1844 and then by Bahá'u'lláh. They commonly compare the fulfillment of Christian prophecies to Jesus' fulfillment of Jewish prophecies, where in both cases people were expecting the literal fulfillment of apocalyptic statements.[7]
William W. Davies (1833–1906), leader of a Latter Day Saint schismatic group called the Kingdom of Heaven located in Walla Walla, Washington from 1867 to 1881. He taught his followers that he was the archangel Michael, who had previously lived as the biblical Adam, Abraham, and David. When his son Arthur was born on 11 February 1868, Davies declared that the infant was the reincarnated Jesus Christ.[8][9] When Davies's second son, David, was born in 1869, he was declared to be God the Father.[8]
Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, India (1835–1908), claimed to be the awaited Mahdi as well as the Second Coming and likeness of Jesus, the promised Messiah at the end of time. He claimed to be Jesus in the metaphorical sense; in character. He founded the Ahmadiyya Movement in 1889, envisioning it to be the rejuvenation of Islam, and claimed to be commissioned by God for the reformation of mankind.
Cyrus Teed (1839–1908), American physician, claimed to be the incarnation of Jesus Christ and to have obtained knowledge regarding the Hollow Earth theory, presenting a cosmological model having the Earth as an inverted sphere and the remaining universe located within it.[10]
Carl Browne (1849–1914), American activist and leader of the Coxey's Army protest movement, claimed to be the partial reincarnation of Jesus.[11]
Jim Jones (1931–1978), founder of Peoples Temple, which started off as an offshoot of a mainstream Protestant sect before becoming a personality cult as time went on. He claimed to be the reincarnation of Jesus, Akhenaten, the Buddha, Vladimir Lenin and Father Divine in the 1970s.[24] He organized a mass murder suicide at Jonestown, Guyana on November 18, 1978.[25] He shot himself after the murders were done.
Marshall Applewhite (1931–1997), an American who posted a Usenet message declaring, "I, Jesus—Son of God—acknowledge on this date of September 25/26, 1995: ..."[26] Applewhite and his Heaven's Gate religious group committed mass suicide on March 26, 1997 to rendezvous with what they thought was a spaceship hiding behind Comet Hale–Bopp.[27]
Charles Manson (1934–2017), American criminal, cult leader, and songwriter.[28]
Sun Myung Moon (1920–2012), believed by members of the Unification Church to be the Messiah and the Second Coming of Christ, fulfilling Jesus' unfinished mission. Church members ("Unificationists") consider Sun Myung Moon and his wife, Hak Ja Han, to be the True Parents of humankind as the restored Adam and Eve.[22][23]
There are many cooks, crazies, and criminals who claim to be Jesus, but who is Jesus really?
The only source of accurate information about Jesus can be found in the Bible.

3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
i. The Word (Jesus) was already existing prior to the “ {beginning} .”
{this testifies to Christ’s pre-existence before the Creation}
ii. The fact that the Word was “ {with} ” God shows a distinction from God the
Father. {Jesus is the Second Person of the Triune Godhead}
iii. The fact that the “Word was God” indicates that Jesus is fully {God} .

iv. The statement that “all things came into being by Him” reveals Jesus Himself is the {Creator} God. {cf Col 1:16-17, Jesus is the uncreated Creator}

28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”
{Thomas calls Jesus ‘my God’ (o` qeo,j mou). This is a strong proof text for the deity of Christ. Jesus not only approved of what Thomas said, but encourages everyone to believe the same thing that Thomas did.}
c. According to John 20:30-31, why did the Apostle John write his gospel?
30 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;
31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
i. The main purpose of John’s entire Gospel is to demonstrate Christ’s {deity} . ii. John wrote to persuade people to imitate {Thomas} , who called Jesus “my Lord and my God.” {Jesus speaks of those who will not see Him and will yet believe, and John immediately tells us that he recorded the events in his gospel so that we may believe in just this way, imitating Thomas in his confession of faith.}
Conclusion: We believe in Christ’s preexistence and deity.

a. Jesus claimed His own {pre-existence} as God the Son in John 8:58.
58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”
59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
{Note the response of the Jews in v59, they understood his claim. Jesus could have said, “Before the universe, I Am” (Jn 17:5, 24)}

b. Jesus clearly identified Himself as {God} : John 5:18-23
18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

21 “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.

Conclusion: We trust this further Scriptural evidence of his pre-existence as God the Son.

a. John 1:14 declares that the pre-existing Word became {flesh} . i. Incarnation means ‘to be clothed in flesh’ (Heb. 2:14).
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.
20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21 “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
ii. Jesus is not only fully {God} , He is also fully {man} .
b. How do we explain the idea expressed in Phil. 2:5-8 that Jesus “emptied” Himself?
i. Jesus temporarily laid aside His {glory} so He could become a Servant to us. ii. During His incarnation, Jesus set aside the independent use of His attributes of greatness and only exercised them in submission to His Father.
{self-imposed limitations: Jesus decided to not know some things, cf Mt 24:36} Conclusion: We believe in Christ’s incarnation by virgin birth.

He lived a perfect, {sinless} life: Hebrews 4:15
15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
a. This is one of the essential reasons for the {necessity} of Christ’s virgin birth.
Jesus never inherited the sin nature from Adam (Luke 1:35, “the holy offspring”).
b. Jesus was truly {tempted} as man, but could never sin as God: Luke 4:1-13
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness
2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He became hungry.
3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’ ”
5 And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.
7 “Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.”
8 Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’ ”
9 And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here;
10 for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You,’
11 and, ‘On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’ ”
12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
13 When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.
{to be tempted is not sinful, to yield to temptation is sinful!}
c. What did Jesus’ enemies fail to do? Luke 23:4 (cf. John 8:45-46)
{Jesus was totally blameless and absolutely above reproach} Conclusion: We believe in Christ’s sinless life.

Jesus died for our {sins} : 2 Cor. 5:21
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
a. The penalty for sin is {death} (Rom. 5:12; 6:23), and all humans, except Jesus, have sinned (Rom. 3:23).
b. It follows then, that every human being except Jesus deserves to die. But Jesus {died} !
Why? {Jesus voluntarily chose to die in our place!}
i. Jesus said He would die for others: (1)
11 “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
(2) Mark 10:45
45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
ii. Jesus sought our rescue through His death:
1 Peter 2:24 ; 3:18
24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
Conclusion: We believe in Christ’s substitutionary death.

6. Jesus {rose} again: Luke 24:36-43 {How did they know this was a real body?
36 While they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be to you.”
37 But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit.
38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39 “See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
40 And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.
41 While they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?”
42 They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish;
43 and He took it and ate it before them.
Jesus ate before them; His testimony in 24:39; He invited them to touch Him (Jn 20:27)}
a. Jesus {predicted} His own resurrection! Mk 8:31; 9:9,31; 10:34; Jn 10:17-18
17 “For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again.
18 “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”
b. Jesus fulfilled {prophecy} by rising from the dead: Isa. 53:8-12
8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.

3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

c. Why is the resurrection so important to Christianity? 1 Corinthians 15:14
14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.
17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.
{The resurrection is critical to our faith} Conclusion: We believe in Christ’s bodily resurrection.

7. Jesus is our {high} {priest} , interceding for us to the Father. a. Acts 1:9-11 is the record of Christ’s ascension.
9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them.
11 They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”
b. Hebrews 4:14-16 describes Christ’s present ministry.
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Conclusion: We believe in Christ’s ascension into heaven and present ministry.

Acts 1:11
11 They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”
a. John 14:3 {Notice the promise of Christ}
3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.
b. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 {this describes the Pre-Tribulation Rapture} Conclusion: We believe in the fact that Jesus is coming again.
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
9. Can someone reject Jesus and still be {accepted} by God? Luke 10:16 a
16 “The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”
To reject Christ is to reject the {Father} .
b. What is the Father’s will according to John 6:40?
40 “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
{for everyone to turn to the Son and believe in Him}
c. Jesus pointed to Himself as the {only} true way of salvation: John14:6
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
{any religious system that points people away from Jesus as the only source and means to salvation is false! We don’t deserve any way to the Father. God has been extremely gracious to provide us a way!}
10. What is your response to Jesus Christ?
