My One and Only

Exodus 20:1-3 (KJV)

1 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

[1]

I.        There’s Only One God For All People

A.      In all time

3068 יהוה, יְהוִה [Yâhovah /yeh·ho·vaw/] n pr dei. From 1961; TWOT 484a; GK 3378; 6519 occurrences; AV translates as “LORD” 6510 times, “GOD” four times, “JEHOVAH” four times, and “variant” once. 1 the proper name of the one true God. 1a unpronounced except with the vowel pointings of 0136. Additional Information: Jehovah = “the existing One”[2]

B.      In all nations

                        - The God of Egypt, though they did not own Him as such, but he                           took the Israelites out with a mighty hand, showing himself God                          over all the gods in Egypt.

C.      In all circumstances

-Nothing is to big for your God unless your God is too small. If he                           is rated among other God’s, he is subject to a be challenged, but if                            He is God Almighty, there is no circumstance that is above Him.

II.      There’s Only One God For Your Good

A.      Our God Defines us

-We become what we worship. If we truly worship God, we                                       become more godly, but if we worship self, we become more                                         selfish.

***   We pay God honor and reverence, not for his sake (because he is of himself full of glory to which no creature can add anything), but for our own sake.

-- Thomas Aquinas, medieval theologian. Men of Integrity, Vol. 1, no. 1.

B.      Our God Delivers us

                        - He delivered the Israelites from the house of bondage, which was                         slavery to Egypt. He delivers us from the bondage to sin, and our                              sinful passions which enslave us.

C.      Our God Defends us

                        Miriam’s Song –

The strong arm of the Lord in Isaiah

Gideon – God defends us from our enemies.

        2 Samuel 22:3-4 (NIV)

3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,

my shield and the horn of my salvation.

He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—

from violent men you save me.

4 I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise,

and I am saved from my enemies. [3]

III.   There’s Only One God For His Glory

A.      He Is Worthy Of Honor

Back of all, above all, before all is God; first in sequential order, above                         in rank and station, exalted in dignity and honor .

                   A. W. Tozer (1897-1963)

B.      He Is Worthy Of Praise

Many place this event on May 30th, being the day of Pentecost on which the Jews would later celebrate the harvest of ingathering, and on which Christians see the ingathering of three thousand souls into the Kingdom on the occasion of the first Christian sermon delivered by Peter, whom Jesus charged to feed His sheep. So we see that Praise is due his name for gathering His people from the harvest field, and for feeding them both Physically and Spiritually. Both of these foods are needed for our survival as God’s people. God is good to provide for us, gathering us in, and providing for our sustenance. It is for this reason, we call Him the Good Shepherd.

Praise is more than singing, it's the saint reflecting the life of Christ.

C.      He Is Worthy Of Worship

Matthew 4:10 (NIV)

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

[4]

- To condome our worship of another would be to condone a lie, giving worth to one it is not due, and ascribing the glory due to God to an unworthy candidate.

1 Corinthians 10:20 (NIV)

20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.

[5]

*** Worship is pulling our affections off our idols and putting them on God.

-- Tim Keller, Leadership, Vol. 15, no. 2.

Conclusion:

Only one God exists, though He exists in three persons, in an eternal trinity. Only as we Worship Him can we find true fulfillment. It is for our good that we worship Him, and it is because He is worthy of all glory honor and praise. If you do not worship him now, there will come a time when you will.

On earth join all ye creatures to extol

Him first, him last, him midst, and without end.

      John Milton (1608-1674)

Philippians 2:5-11 (NIV)

5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,

7 but made himself nothing,

taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness.

8 And being found in appearance as a man,

he humbled himself

and became obedient to death—

even death on a cross!

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

and gave him the name that is above every name,

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.
