II.
Why wine?
What is the significance of wine for the Jews?
It could have been a symbolic action.
In the OT, abundant wine (and oil or milk) are signs of the age of fulfillment: Amos 9:13-14; Isaiah 25:6-9
Jesus’ conversion of such a large quantity of water into wine would indicate that the long-awaited kingdom of God had arrived.
God himself had drawn near in the person and ministry of Jesus, and the fulfillment of the promise of abundant blessings was beginning to be fulfilled.
Interpretation:
John narrates to the readers the miracle of turning water into wine to show that Jesus is God in the flesh (John 1:14).
Being divine, Jesus has the power to recreate and change matter (in the atomic level change).
The sign of turning water into wine is a foretaste of the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God.
