We are in our third section of this Epistle as we continue to move through the introductory section, that will conclude in 2:27. John, has been working through tests in his introduction where he employs six conditional clauses, and systematically applies a test to either expose the lie of, or to affirm the truth of, a profession.

And then contrasts the practice of walking in the truth, with the pattern of walking in the darkness. God is Light: In Scripture the contrast between light and darkness applies to three main spheres: 1. Intellectually: Light is Truth: Darkness is Lies. 2. Morally: Light is Purity or Holiness: Darkness is Evil or Unrighteousness. 3. Regeneratively: Light is Life and Sight: Darkness is Death and Blindness. John Stott: “We are to think of God as a personal being, infinite in all His perfections, transcendent, the high and lofty One, He who lives forever, whose name is holy, yet He desires to be known and has revealed Himself.” I. That You Can Have Fellowship with God, While Living in Unbroken Patterns of Sin: (vs. 6-9) “If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” II. That Man is More Righteous Than He is; and That God is Less Holy Than He is: (vs. 10-2:2) “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.” Eight Indicators That You Practice the Truth: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
