Me
I am bad at asking for help
Need Help
Need of a helper
We
I am sure I am not the only one
We all need help
How much of a blessing is it that we are provided a helper, a comforter.
God
Pray - “May the words of my mouth and the meditations of our hearts be pleasing in your sights, o Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer.
Understanding the OT connection to the coming of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:1–13 ESV
1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
When we look at this we often continue in our reading of Acts or focus on this isolated moment
We must zoom out a bit to better understand what happened that day, and its role in Gods overall redemptive plan.
This is important in the whole of the gospel narrative.
The OT feasts, like Pentecost point to Christ’s fulfillments in the NT and some still to come.
The Old Testament Set standards ands understandings of Festivals established by God were purposeful with them.
This is important in our understanding of the Lord’s Supper
Pentecost was 50 days after the Passover
Shavuot
Purpose
Primary Thanksgiving for first fruits
Second the giving of the Law at Sinai
The Spirit came at this time aas a fulfillment in Christ
--
Christ is the fulfillment of these celebrations
He is the firstborn of creation
He is the firstborn of the dead
And he is the fulfillment of the law.
The Spirit came as a fulfillment of Christ
John 14:15-31 - Promise of the comforter
John 16:7–8 ESV
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:

The Spirit Arrives

Acts 2:1-4 - Coming of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:1–4 ESV
1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
One thing to note is there is physicality here. They heard the wind they felt the wind and they saw the Spirit descending
The Holy Spirit is real, he acts, and he shows Himself here
Coming for the first time as a permanent indweller
Before temporary based on assignments and obedience
Builders of the tabernacle
Samson
Calling of the Believers
He calls us, we do not call him
Spiritual Gifts
Opening Eyes
The passage in John, he will convict the world

The Believer’s Response

Acts 2:5–11 ESV
5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”
What we are to do with our gifts
Use the gifts
Go and Do
Proclaim the word of God

The World’s Response

Acts 2:12–13 ESV
12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
Some will accept and be amazed at the work of God. Others will call Jesus a myth and us crazy.
But we are to continue to preach, teach, and reach.
You
The Helper is present
The Helper moves
The Helper gives us the way
The Helper is present
The Helper moves
The Helper gives us the way
We
We must trust the Holy Spirit. This does not mean to flip a coin and he will act. Instead he will show us the way, he will give us the word. Let us go into the world and with our gifts proclaim the gospel to the nations.
