God’s Path For You!

Text: John 4:3-26

Introduction

As we live life and grow older, we find ourselves on many paths: marriage, family, career, college, etc.
Out of all the paths of life, there is ONE PATH that is of the most important; a path that is of the greatest importance; the path to and for the gospel of Jesus Christ!
This passage will loudly speak to both Saint and sinner. There is hope of forgiveness and real purpose! There is an identity that frees your from the bondage of this life only found in the gosepl; trusting Jesus as your Savior and Lord.
Let us follow the path that Jesus has laid out before us and ask ourselves, “Am I currently on that path?”

1) Jesus Was On A Set Path!

Since the age of twelve, Jesus was on a path to illuminate our minds that are dead to seeking God and His truth.
Notice verse 4.
The sovereignty of God should be something you adore.
We are witnessing God’s sovereign initiative to personally call a lost sinner to repentance and faith.
This initiative actually began at the digging of Jacob’s well.
This set path would help shape the understanding of His disciples about who he came to save.

2) Jesus Was On A Relational Path!

How do you know that Jesus wasn’t there for some water? Historical significance of the well?
Jesus needed the necessities of life to survive, but this encounter was not about His survival.
This was concerning her birth.
What was so important about this relational aspect?
Consider the time of day she came to the well.
She was rejected even by her own people.
She was living under the identity structure of the culture — You are who we say you are.
Don’t miss Jesus’ willingness to reveal Himself to the most vilest sinner!
Listen — To have the Son is to have life!
Notice how the simple request opened a door to a spiritual conversation.
It formed a bridge over the chasm history had made between their people.
It led to the most important conversation; a conversation about her soul.
It is vain to think that people will voluntarily come to you seeking knowledge of the truth.
You must (with gentleness and courteousness) go to them.
Jesus took the time to know what would be the best avenue to her heart.
Quote: There is a handle to every mind, and our chief aim must be to het hold of it — J.C. Ryle

3) Jesus Provided A Path To Life!

This Path to life is not a path that detours around your sin.
Notice her request (v15)
All that her mind was focused on was the rejection and humiliation of others.
Her walk to the well was always a reminder of the identity her sin had given her.
She wanted to avoid the reality of her current life.
This was the first time she saw her as He saw her.
APPLICATION — We must follow our Master’s example and help people see and feel their sinfulness and need.
A sinner will never turn to Christ outside of seeing himself as God sees him!!!
This is why it’s important that we never stop talking about God’s holiness and His law.
Only then is there opportunity when a person sees the beauty of Jesus.
(vv16-18) Jesus responds by calling her attention to her sin.
He came to her while in her darkest sin.
A path to Jesus is the path to life.
Jesus is the life giver (living water)
Jesus is the life sustainer (eternal fountain)
Receiving the promise of eternal life is not determined by religious traditions, but in casting one’s faith on Jesus (v21)
True worship depends not on the place it’s offered, bur rather from the heart it’s offered from!!!
1 Sam. 16:7 “7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”

4) Jesus Needs Laborers On The Harvest Path!

Jesus teaches them what their greatest hunger should be; to labor in God’s harvest.
See with your heart so you can see with your eyes.
God has given you a corner of His global harvest field.
The Lord’s harvest requires a variety of laborers.
Like a relay team.
God’s harvest is made up of people that are different and yet the same as you.
Jesus teaches them the power of sowing one gospel seed (vv. 39-42)

Conclusion

Whatever a person’s past may have been, whatever your present looks like now, there is HOPE FOR YOU in Christ!
Jesus is willing to receive every sinner that cries out to Him in repentance and faith.
