5 Stages of the Journey to Christ

Suspicion

They don’t trust the Bible or Christians
As Christians, we need to build relationships on trust
Reveal to them that first, we are human and two, we love them.

Curious

This is where they start asking questions
We need to be confident with how we answer their concerns
1 Peter 3:15
We must be in study and understanding of our Bibles to be able to dialogue about any objections. We’ll talk more about this in the weeks to come.

Contemplating

They begin counting the cost
What does this mean for me? What does this mean for my life? Is my life as I know it over?
Engage them with the Bible and what the Lord has done through His word in your life.
Talk about what your life was like before Christ compared to now that you are in Christ.
Life now is much better than life then.

Seeking

They’ll begin applying truths to their lives

Surrender

Sounds great, and all. But how do we go about this and why?
Flyover last week’s lesson on Matthew 28:18-20
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
“Every Christian is either a missionary or an imposter.”
Charles Spurgeon
Discipleship definition: Deep work in community over time.

How do we make disciples?

Choose Someone

Discipleship begins in relationship
2 Timothy 1:4 ESV
As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy.
Can you name someone you long to see?
Discipleship in relationships allows us to do deep work
Soul level stuff
More than surface
This allows us to be known

Have Clear Aims

Prioritize the Mission
Paul’s motive everywhere he goes is to make disciples
Acts 16 - The Church of Philippi
Lydia
Slave Girl
Jailer
Philippians 1:2–5 (ESV)
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.

Pay the Cost

Discipling requires time
Discipling requires study
Discipling requires prayer
Discipling requires love
John 13:31–35 ESV
When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Mark 12:28–31 ESV
And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Multiply

We want more than addition, we want multiplication
Teach them to teach others
We’re only disciples if we’re disciple making disciples
We want the people we disciple, to disciple other people.

Conclusion
