Did you hear the News????
Did you hear the News????
Acts 17:21 (ESV)
Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in NOTHING except telling or hearing something new.
Question, who knows what Athens Greece is famous for? Athens was known for being really smart. Some of the smartest people in human history came from Greece. If we think right now, who are some of the smartest people in the world? Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Aaron Rodgers.... We have some pretty smart people today in the world. But Greece arguably had some of the smartest people of all time. Anyone heard of Plato? Greek Philosopher. Anyone heard of Socrates? Greek Philosopher. Anyone ever do a project on Aristotle? Greek Philosopher.
Greece was known for being like the smartest place on planet earth. And it’s interesting, because the bible tells us that the culture in Athens Greece was that they would spend their time doing nothing except talking about new things.
Throughout human history, we have always been searching for the next new thing. The next new TV Show, the next new movie, the next new artist like olivia rodrigo, or the next new athlete like Patrick Mahomes. We just want the next new thing.
Now the people there would spend their time in NOTHING except telling or hearing something new.
This is what humans do. We get into this cycle of new things.
People are stuck in the news cycle
People are stuck in the news cycle
Who’s the next new football player. Who’s the next new best player of all time. Who’s the new Tomothy Chalamet. T swift hasn’t dropped an album in like a year, whens the newest t-swift album coming out. Like, remember when the iphone 7 was a big deal, now we on the iphone 13 and the things got 3 cameras. Before you know it, iphone 20 gonna have a bagilean cameras. We are in this cycle of new things, and God is screaming at us saying: Hey! Stop throwing your life away! There’s always gonna be a new flavour at Culvers. But theres a God described in your bible that never grows old. People are always searching for something thats new, but we don’t even realize, the thing that we need is God.
We need to help people get out of the news cycle
We need to help people get out of the news cycle
People in this world want nothing to do with Jesus. How do we have conversations with people who are stuck in the news cycle and closed off to Jesus. Maybe you have a family member who want’s little to do with Christianity. Maybe you have some friends that think christianity is stupid. Maybe you hear today wondering if this Jesus thing is legit. Well I think Paul actually shows us in scripture how to have helpful conversations with people who are stuck in the News Cycle. Let’s look, Acts 17: 22-23
Acts 17:22–23 (ESV)
So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship.....
Everyone Worships Something
Everyone Worships Something
Who here can tell me who the greeks worshiped? Yes! The greek gods. Who were some of the greek gods? Yeah, it was thought that Athens had twice as many statues as there were people. So if there were 15,000 people, there were 30,000 statues. Crazy. And what they would do is make sacrifices to these statues so in return they could get what they wanted. Now do people in America today bow down to statues? No. But we do worship other things to try and get what we want. For example, sports. What we do is we give all of our money, and all of our time, you even risk hurting our bodies all so that we can worship the sport that we play. What’s another thing America likes to worship? Self Image. We’ll take the time to get the perfect social media post, we’ll spend money for the perfect shoes and clothing, we just want to be liked and to look good so we’ll sacrifice all of our time and money to do so. We worship sports, self Image, celebrities, politics. Even the atheist is are religious. Everyone worships something. What do you give your time to? What do you give your body to? what is your heart truly centered on? Acts 17:23
For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.
To the Unknown God

Look at this. 90% of people believe that there is a higher power. Most people believe that there is something out there. Theres someone out there, but he’s unknown. He hasn’t talked to me. I believe theres a God, but he hasn’t shown me convincing evidence. I used to do this when I was younger. I would go, God, if you’re real, give me a sign. God if you’re real then make that dog do a backflip.
