Intro and Tension

James 1:2–4 ESV
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Do you ever wonder Why God wants to refine you? Why can’t he just leave us in Comfort? Why can’t he just make it all dandy? I don’t often start a sermon with the end in mind | today I want us to keep in mind what God is trying to do with us | Refine us - but not because he doesn’t want the best | But because He cares deeply about you, as his treasured posession |
Message Series | Treasured Posession | first week : We spoke on the isrealites, about to receive new covenant | base of Mount sinai | and God said “If you Obey my Voice and keep my covenant, you will be my treasured posession” Possession = Segullah = Owned, we are his. Last week = Bondage, come out of Bondage | In the Wilderness | Sometimes we don’t get out | Deliverance starts with a decision |
Today; I want to talk about a pattern we get into | God has really been speaking to me on this | I don’t know how long this series will go for | But I feel like God wants to get some people out of the wilderness | Who wants change? Today we talk about getting…comfortably uncomfortable.
Title: We are going to live Comfortably Uncomfortable
Why? Because God is calling you to do something, that you can not do | Something that only God can do | We need to stop saying we aren’t good at something | Can’t go somewhere | Can’t complete something | Need to start saying, can’t do that…yet | When you step out of your comfort zone | What happens? | Power made perfect in weakness
pray
Uncomfortable is different for everyone, but the result is the same for everyone | Uncomfortable to forgive, to put yourselves in social settings, to commit, to have faith however, In that palce is where God is and where he wants you.
Luke 9:23–24 ESV
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
AMP:
23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests], and take up his cross daily [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me].
24 For whoever wishes to save his life [in this world] will [eventually] lose it [through death], but whoever loses his life [in this world] for My sake, he is the one who will save it [from the consequences of sin and separation from God]
comfort is not something that just happens. We cater to it. We serve it.
Catering to your comfort is not Christlike, but Confronting your comfort takes courage.
Joshua 1:9 ESV
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
To get out of wilderness, to break patterns that we picked up in Bondage, to be refined as treasured possession, we need to confront our Comfort. Grumbling, slavery was comfortable. God is saying, I have got so much more.
Let’s turn to a story, we all know it, let’s look at it with fresh eyes.
2 Samuel 11 - King David - Same David - Shephard Boy, Same David - Killed the bear, the lion and Goliath, pasture to palace.
2 Samuel 11:1–5 ESV
In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”
Kings go out to Battle | Go to Church, Connect group, Family = Where are you meant to be? Paramters = protection | ARose from Couch = Resting / Comfortable |
David has sinned out of his Comfort, so what do we try and do; The Great Cover Up begins.
Then what does David do? He sends for her Husband Uriah - Uriah Comes, and david says;
2 Samuel 11:8 ESV
Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” And Uriah went out of the king’s house, and there followed him a present from the king.
Relax, get Comfortable - Care Package | Comfort always wants company | That’s why community is so important.
What did Uriah do?
2 Samuel 11:9 ESV
But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house.
David asked why, look waht Uriah said;
2 Samuel 11:11 ESV
Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.”
Uriah didn’t cater to His Comfort | Calling to sure | Purpose too strong | When you are concentrating on your calling, you won’t cater to your comfort | Nehiamiah on the wall - Work is too great to come down | Jesus has chosen you | Treasured Posession
this part of the story grieves me | David, saved by God from Saul, Killed Goliath, starts plotting assasination.
2 Samuel 11:14–15 ESV
In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die.”
He had to carry his own death Sentence = Comfort kills things that are meant to LIVE.
God has something for you, and your comfort is stopping you from getting there.
Bethsheba’s husband dies, and then this;
2 Samuel 11:26–27 ESV
When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she lamented over her husband. And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.
This is the spot, where most people have a decision | confront your comfort, repent, or keep going down the rabbit hole. It’s uncomfortable to confront the sin in your life - Repenting, is uncomfortable. Change.
Comfort has a twin, Convinience = David was attached to comfort, and Bethsheba was convinient | Anything that is easy is ours | Netflix generation | Super market generation | 10 hours or 10 days = 10 hours | What ever is convinient |
Journey about eating foods that nourish your body, the way God’s creatures are grown, looked after = It’s not convinient
Comfort and Convinience is killing your calling.
Comfort and convinience always concieves something that Something is a pattern, that stops you from your calling (Isrealites in Wilderness)
DAvid was comfortable, Bethsheba was convinient, they concieved a son. What Pattern have you created, that should not have been made, because your comfort and convinience.
If God calls you to something, it will not be convinient | Noah, Building an Ark when it never rained was convinient? Every one of the disciples faced Persecution | Jesus, going to the cross = only way.
God is trying to Transform you, by the renewing of your mind, so it’s not going to be convinient when you have a calling | Give away stuff you love | Serve in areas you didn’t think you could serve in | Be a part of something | He is refining = So that you will lack in nothing | Melting you | You are being asked to step out | and if you DO;
Philippians 4:19 ESV
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Back to David
2 Samuel 12:1–7 ESV
And the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very many flocks and herds, but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him. Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” Then David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.” Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.
Nathan told David the truth for the first time and it was uncomfortable. The TRUTH can be UNCOMFORTABLE.
My story on tithing
Sometimes someone can have the courage to tell you the truth and you take it as an offence. Truth has become so offensive that people don’t even entertain the thought that it could impact their life.
Before we get offended, ask yourself, is there any truth to this.
John 8:32 ESV
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
God sent Nathan to tell David the truth | Holy Spirits Job to “Guide us into all truth” | Conviction brings us close to God | Refines us | For His Purpose
2 Samuel 12:7–8 ESV
Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. And I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if this were too little, I would add to you as much more.
What if what you need from God, Forgive that person | Community | Character | you don’t have not because you aren’t qualified but because you are committed to comfort and convinience |
You may not feel you can, but God is good at supplying - In His Time, not OUR Time.
Mi Goreng and Christmas Story
Lived off Mi Goreng = Convinient | Christmas = Fancy big Meats, veges, gosh we held Christmas at our place once | Emma always looks at instructions on a packet = She says why would I listen to you when I can listen to manufacturer | Imagine getting to Chrissy with lots of Mi Gorengs | Worse, if chicken was cooked in the Microwave for 3 minutes | Something that was meant for the oven | The Fire | Rather, go in the microwave | Rather be half Baked | God is saying to get in the microwave |
Imagine the Chicken coming out | It would be cold | Bleeding | Not fit for the purpose | but GOD is saying, I AM PREPARING SOMETHING | I AM DOING SOMETHING | WAIT ON ME | MY TIMING IS PERFECT | GET IN THE FIRE | DON”T GET OUT | YOU PICKED UP A PATTERN IN BONDAGE THAT I WANT TO BREAK
Don’t do what is convinient, do waht is your calling.
Fulfilling purpose is only going to happen outside your comfort Zone.
Step out of the dark, and come into a brand new level of light.
Confront Comfort and Convinience.

Inspo and Close

So what do we do?
Practical ways;
1. Community - You need a Nathan to tell you the truth.
Ecc 4:9
Ecclesiastes 4:9 ESV
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.
Ecclesiastes 4:10 ESV
For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!
We need each other
2. Concentrate on your calling - Makes you NOT THINK about your Convenience and Comfort - Went out to war, not a situation.a Nehiamiah - Please, don’t bother me, the work I’m doing is too great to come down. Not need something new. Concentrate
3. Commit in Covenant - God uses Covenent, especially the Covenant of Marriage. Marriage will rob you of comfort and convenience - “You choose someone you’re willing to suffer with” that’s what marriage is - You can’t lie about nothing. God uses that container of marriage to fix stuff. “I thought 15 years in, it was meant to be easier eithout work” - who told you that? What else does he use? Kids. Those people in covenant, cultivate kids.
4. Philippians 2:13
Philippians 2:13 ESV
for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
God says “give it to me” - and it’s not going to be great, but I’m gonna help you walk in it. I will give you the DESIRE and the POWER. How did I become a pastor? Stepping out of my comfort zone - God has Provided.
God is saying, in this time of Uncertainty, I am calling my Church, to step into their Calling.
God has some refining in you to do, he has some bondage to break in you
James 1:2–4 ESV
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

**Altar Call** Jesus going to the cross was not comfortable. Jesus, going to the cross was not convinient.
