Who Are You Serving?

Matthew 6:24 NIV
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
pray

Confession of Faith

I am not moved by what I see or by what I feel. I am moved by what I believe. I believe the WORD of God! The victory is mine! I have it now! I can see it through the eyes of my faith! In Jesus Name

Intro:
Today in the text we see Jesus warning us that there is a choice that we have to make! The choice is between two kinds of masters!
He tells us that this choice is critical, because as a man, woman we will hate one master and love the other!
The problems comes into play when both masters call us at the same time!
That’s when we must make a choice! We will favor, we will serve, we will help, we will love on master,
while we are disfavoring, we are rejecting, we are disrespecting and ultimately hating the other!
Here’s the deal we are either going to hold on or cleave to one or we are going to despise one of the masters
We choose which master to favor and serve!
If you hold on to one - you are going to disrespect and spite the other!
You cannot serve two masters!
You either serve God or you serve Material Things!
You have two treasures
The world and it’s treasures or God and His treasures!
You have physical and material things or you have spiritual and eternal things!
Now where ever you are at in life - you have committed yourself to one of these two treasures!
Money or God!
You are focusing your heart, your eyes, your mind, your attention, your thoughts, your hands, your energy on earthly things or on heavenly things!
Some will look at wealth as a blessing of God!
Some say wealth is a sign that you are godly
1 Timothy 6:5–11 NLT
5 These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy. 6 Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. 7 After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. 8 So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. 9 But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. 11 But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.

Side Note::

Can’t I Serve God and have money too?

remember everything you have God gave it to you!
Luke 14:33 NCV
33 In the same way, you must give up everything you have to be my follower.
Now we know when the bible talks about mammon - it’s talking about earthly treasures that can mean many things
Matthew 6:19–20 NLT
19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
Ok Pastor - what do you mean by earthly treasures
Riches and Wealth
James 4:13 NCV
13 Some of you say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to some city. We will stay there a year, do business, and make money.”
James 5:1 NCV
1 You rich people, listen! Cry and be very sad because of the troubles that are coming to you.
Earthly Treasures can be fleshly desires
Philippians 3:19 NCV
19 In the end, they will be destroyed. They do whatever their bodies want, they are proud of their shameful acts, and they think only about earthly things.
Earthly treasures can wanting everything you see
Matthew 5:28 NCV
28 But I tell you that if anyone looks at a woman and wants to sin sexually with her, in his mind he has already done that sin with the woman.
Matthew 6:23 NCV
23 But if your eyes are evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. And if the only light you have is really darkness, then you have the worst darkness.
Mark 7:22 NCV
22 greed, evil actions, lying, doing sinful things, jealousy, speaking evil of others, pride, and foolish living.
Earthly treasures can be fleshly desires
1 John 2:15–16 NCV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If you love the world, the love of the Father is not in you. 16 These are the ways of the world: wanting to please our sinful selves, wanting the sinful things we see, and being too proud of what we have. None of these come from the Father, but all of them come from the world.
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
Earthly treasures can be pure laziness, trying to get out of work, trying to get everything for free, and constantly operating in unproductive activities
Proverbs 6:6–11 NCV
6 Go watch the ants, you lazy person. Watch what they do and be wise. 7 Ants have no commander, no leader or ruler, 8 but they store up food in the summer and gather their supplies at harvest. 9 How long will you lie there, you lazy person? When will you get up from sleeping? 10 You sleep a little; you take a nap. You fold your hands and lie down to rest. 11 So you will be as poor as if you had been robbed; you will have as little as if you had been held up.

Godly Treasures

God promises us several things when we serve him!
He will take care all the necessities of life
Matthew 6:33 NCV
33 Seek first God’s kingdom and what God wants. Then all your other needs will be met as well.
God will free us from anxiety
Philippians 4:6–7 NCV
6 Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks. 7 And God’s peace, which is so great we cannot understand it, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
God will gives Joy and contentment
John 15:11 NCV
11 I have told you these things so that you can have the same joy I have and so that your joy will be the fullest possible joy.
Hebrews 13:5 NCV
5 Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be satisfied with what you have. God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.”
John 10:10 (KJV 1900)
10 I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
God promised us eternal life
John 3:16 NCV
16 “God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life.
John 5:24 NCV
24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears what I say and believes in the One who sent me has eternal life. That person will not be judged guilty but has already left death and entered life.
So to Serve God, we must understand the heart!
Matthew 6:22 NLT
22 “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light.
Matthew 6:23 NLT
23 But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!
Jesus is telling us the eye is a gate that give entrance to our mind or to the heart of a person!
What you look at is what you think about! What we think about is what we become
Proverbs 23:7 (NKJV)
7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
If we put our eyes on Jesus, who is the light of the world
or if we put our focus on Jesus then our minds will be full of light!
So what we do will be to serve God with singleness of eye and heart!
With a good heart and eyes focused on Jesus we can then do his will or serve him!
This is what the church should be about
Acts 2:46 NKJV
46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,
Our hearts is precisely where are treasure is! If my treasure is earthly things - I will serve that
If my treasure is Jesus - I will serve him!
So we now we know!
Colossians 3:2 NKJV
2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Ephesians 1:3 (NCV)
3 In Christ, God has given us every spiritual blessing in the heavenly world.
James 2:5 NCV
5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters! God chose the poor in the world to be rich with faith and to receive the kingdom God promised to those who love him.
So the question is who are you serving?
Who are you looking at - Jesus or this earth
Where is your treasure - On this earth or in heaven!
So What Do I Do Now?
Matthew 6:25 NLT
25 “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?
When we trust the bible and not what we see or feel then we don’t worry!
Do not be overly concerned
Philippians 4:6 NLT
6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
Matthew 6:31 NLT
31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’
Matthew 6:34 NLT
34 “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
Here’s the deal - Jesus is not telling us not to prepare for life - He is not saying be lazy, thoughtless with I don’t care attitude! He is telling us to look after our responsibilities’
Proverbs 27:23 NCV
23 Be sure you know how your sheep are doing, and pay attention to the condition of your cattle.
2 Corinthians 11:28 NCV
28 Besides all this, there is on me every day the load of my concern for all the churches.
The bible reminds us - you have to work to eat.
2 Thessalonians 3:10 (NKJV)
10 If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.
Ephesians 4:28 NLT
28 If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need.
28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.
Here is the charge - It’s clear
Don’t Worry, Be consumed with God and people, not things
Seek God First
Serve God
Serve our fellow man
Then God takes care of the necessities and many cases the luxuries
Matthew 6:33 NKJV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
God Bless You until we meet again!
