The name Immanuel means- God with us! How encouraging of a name! Yet as sweet as this name and title is we are introduced to it in a rather wild time!
How great is it that truth about who our God is supersedes our problems!
We are first introduced to this title of God in chapter 7 of Isaiah.
Story
Ahaz is the king in Judah and he is not “the best” king
2 Chron 28:1-2 “1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord, like David his father: 2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim.”
1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord, like David his father: 2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim.
As he is ruling over Judah he gets some really bad news. He get news that would be devastating and near world shattering for a king.
- He finds out that he is going to be invaded by not just one nation but 2!
His heart begins to shake and not just him but the whole country is afraid. The whole nation is fearful, and their hearts are shaking like the “trees of the forest shake before the wind” Is 7:2 “2 And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.”
2 And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.
So, God sends the prophet Isaiah to calm Ahaz’s nerves, telling Isaiah to talk trash about Rezin and Pekah: “Take heed, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of those two smoldering stumps of firebrands” (Isa. 7:4 “4 And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; Fear not, neither be fainthearted For the two tails of these smoking firebrands, For the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.” )
4 And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; Fear not, neither be fainthearted For the two tails of these smoking firebrands, For the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.
God heard what they had said and planned to do with Judah and his city Jerusalem. It didn’t make him happy either!
Is 7:7-8 “7 Thus saith the Lord God, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass. 8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, And the head of Damascus is Rezin; And within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people.”
7 Thus saith the Lord God, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass. 8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, And the head of Damascus is Rezin; And within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people.
God then lets him know that victory will require faith
Is 7:9 “9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, And the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.”
9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, And the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.
God even allows Ahaz to test him! He says ask anything and I’ll answer it.
Is 7:11 “11 Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God; Ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.”
11 Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God; Ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.
What is incredible is that the sign and promise that God gives Ahaz to comfort him is this
Is 7:14 “14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, And shall call his name Immanuel.”
14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, And shall call his name Immanuel.
God does’t promise weapons, armies, or more defense he promises his presence!
The solution to Ahaz’ problem was solved with God’s presence
That promise to Ahaz is wonderful but it has implications for us too!
See look at what was said about Jesus in
Matthew 1:22-23 “22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
How great is that! We can have God with us! Jesus is God and knowing and believing that wonderful name has awesome consequences in our life!
Deliverance from an unbeatable foe
Deliverance from an unbeatable foe
Ahaz was outmatched and outnumbered! There was no way he could win. There was no fight that he could put up.
Sometimes we can find ourselves in the same kind of situation
We can’t beat sin on our own nor can we save our selves
Maybe that anxiety, depression, pain, hurt?
Let me remind you that the victory is found in Emmanuel(Jesus)
Hebrews 9:14 “14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
1 John 2:2 “2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
John 16:33 “33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
Does the problem seem too big? Trust in Immanuel!
Deliverance was inaccessible without faith!
Deliverance was inaccessible without faith!
Victory required faith and faith in God.
Ahaz could have resisted in his own power or rested in God’s
We have the same choice!
1 John 5:4 “4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”
4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
Deliverance from Jesus is unmatched!
Deliverance from Jesus is unmatched!
Since Jesus is that Emmanuel we have some wonderful truths and promises we can carry!
Jesus is God and faith in him allows fellowship with God! - God with us!
- Romans 5:1 “1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
- 1 John 1 :3 “3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”
3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
He will never leave or forsake us!
- Heb 13 5 “5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Matthew 28:20 “20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Him being God with us allows us to serve God with help from God!
Are we people who are trusting God? Have we put our faith in Jesus to save and deliver us? Are we living like that name Immanuel is true?
