Introduction:
Leviticus 23:26–32 ESV
26 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 27 “Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the Lord. 28 And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. 29 For whoever is not afflicted on that very day shall be cut off from his people. 30 And whoever does any work on that very day, that person I will destroy from among his people. 31 You shall not do any work. It is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. 32 It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict yourselves. On the ninth day of the month beginning at evening, from evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath.”

1. Grieve Over Your Sins (v.27, 29, 32)

Leviticus 23:27 ESV
27 “Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the Lord.
Leviticus 23:29 ESV
29 For whoever is not afflicted on that very day shall be cut off from his people.
Leviticus 23:32 ESV
32 It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict yourselves. On the ninth day of the month beginning at evening, from evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath.”
Self-affliction is not self-harm
Colossians 2:23 ESV
23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.
Self-affliction is fasting and denying ourselves with the purpose of grieving over our sin
Mark 8:34–35 ESV
34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.
Romans 6:6–7 ESV
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.
Application:
God wants us to think about our sin and the separation that it causes in fellowship with Him and other people.
Failure to do this resulted in being cut off from the people.
In what ways do we need to stop and think about our sin?
Has your sin grieved you as it grieves God?
Do you need to deny yourself of something you long for in order to be holy before God?

2. Rest in the Finished Work of Christ (v.28-30)

Leviticus 23:28–30 ESV
28 And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. 29 For whoever is not afflicted on that very day shall be cut off from his people. 30 And whoever does any work on that very day, that person I will destroy from among his people.
The Day of Atonement was a day of rest. It was for meditating on God.
Atonement means covering. God has covered our sins
Rest meant no work.
Did you know you can’t do any work to help God with your sins?
Application:
Jesus has taken our sins away and remembers them no more.
Have you rested in the completed work of Jesus?
Do you remember the sins of others in a way that God does not?

3. Forgive Yourself and Obey Christ (v.27, 30)

Leviticus 23:27 ESV
27 “Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the Lord.
Leviticus 23:30 ESV
30 And whoever does any work on that very day, that person I will destroy from among his people.
Application:
We all need forgiveness from God but some of us need to learn to forgive ourselves.
Do you need to forgive yourself of any sins you committed in the past?
Are you living with the freedom that being clean in Jesus provides you?
Conclusion:
Prophetic significance of the Day of Atonement - may look forward to the day that God is going to completely cleanse Israel as a nation.
There is no certainty on how God will use this feast, but it is clear of what it points to in the past. No matter what, we must trust in Jesus to cleanse us, remove our sins, and make us right with the Father.
If we are doing that, there is no fear, because perfect love casts out all fear.
