Introduction

The angel has the key to the abyss

The bottomless pit is were demons abode

The bottomless pit is not held

I. Raised at Last

Revelation 20:4 (NKJV)

4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

“Judgment was committed to them” refers to the Church and martyred Tribulation Saints. They will sit upon thrones and reign with Jesus during the Millennium.

They will even be given the authority to judge the world

Connecting the dots

1 Corinthians 6:2–3 NKJV

2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life?

“The souls of those who had been beheaded” refers to the martyred Tribulation Saints. They were beheaded for two reasons: because of their testimony for Jesus, and to fulfill the Word of God.

These will be Gentiles and Jews who refused to worship the Antichrist or his image, and refused to take his mark. After Satan is bound and chained, their souls will appear, and they will be raised from the dead in the fourth and final phase of the resurrection*.

1 Corinthians 15:20–23 NKJV

20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.

Revelation 5:10 NKJV

10 And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.”

II. Resurrection of Life

Revelation 20:5 NKJV

5 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

Jesus spoke about this in John's Gospel

John 5:28–29 NKJV

28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

Let’s talk about - “The Two Resurrections”

The first resurrection is called the resurrection of life or the resurrection of believers.

The second resurrection is called the resurrection of damnation or the resurrection of unbelievers.

This verse reveals that there will be a thousand years between the two. Perhaps some clarification would help.

Some people think that the first resurrection means only one resurrection, but that is not the case. The first resurrection is a resurrection that began more than nineteen hundred years ago and occurred in four phases

Phase 1—the resurrection of Christ and some Old Testament Saints*

Matthew 27:52–53 NKJV

52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

Prophecy of the End Times

Daniel 12:1–3 NKJV

1 “At that time Michael shall stand up, The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never was since there was a nation, Even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, Every one who is found written in the book. 2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever.

Phase 2—the resurrection of the Church at the Rapture

1 Thessalonians 4:16 NKJV

16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

Phase 3—the resurrection of the two witnesses

Revelation 11:3 NKJV

3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”

Phase 4—the resurrection of the Tribulation Saints and the remainder of the Old Testament Saints at the end of the Tribulation Period

Second Resurrection—the unbelievers at the end of the Millennium

III. It’s a Bodily Resurrection

The body of Elijah disappeared • 2 Kings 2:1-16

The body of Jesus disappeared • Luke 24:1-3

Many bodies of the saints arose • Matthew 27:52

Matthew 27:52 NKJV

52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;

The 144,000 and those believers who survive the Tribulation Period will not be resurrected since they will still be alive at the start of the Millennium.

John 3:16

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:13

13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:

Lord I believe that Jesus is the son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
