Empowered with Purpose
MPT: Jesus has given provided us with an opportunity to live a life marked with glory and excellent virtue. This is found through a personal relationship with God, also made available through Jesus.
MPM: Jesus has provided for us an opportunity to escape the destructive life this world would lead us to and to become the person God intends us to be.
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
Peter begins this letter with an amazing type of encouragement that is equally challenging...
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
“His divine power has granted to us all things pertaining to life and godliness...”
Do you happen to recall the last thing you asked God for?
Or how about time when you were at your lowest, and cried out in desperation for God’s grace.
Well this verse is about something that God has already granted, from His divine power, something that you never had to ask for.
Notice the completeness of it … all things...
“…all things pertaining to life and Godliness...”
Well it sure sounds important, but what does it mean.
Life: (course of life), the course of life for an individual.
It is joined in meaning the term “GODLINESS”
These are not two separate things.
godly-life
the way God wants us to live.
King Jesus, grant me what I need for my quest.
You quest is a life that honors God.
Summary statement of what we have so far...
From His divine power, Christ Jesus has granted you an opportunity to have everything you need to live a godly-life.
You’ll notice I said an “OPPORTUNITY” ...
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
But He doesn’t simply zap this into us dies He?
Rather is it made available to us.
How do we obtain this then?
“through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence.”
Knowledge:
So if you know God through faith in Chris?
this is deeper than that!
Knowledge: emphasizes a personal relationship.
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
Jesus provided us access to personal relationship with God.
Action on our part is required.
We need to pursue this relationship.
What should we expect this relationship to be like?
“He has called us to His own glory and excellence.”
excellence: (KJV) is VIRTUE
not virtue compared to world’s standards
Excellence in virtue
Still focusing on our “Course of Life”, Peter is saying this:
We have been giving the ability to live a Godly life, through a personal relationship with the one who called us to live according to His own glory and virtue.
How incredible is this?!!!!!
We know Jesus provided this incomparable gift of salvation.
But it didn’t stop there.
We have been given the ability to have a close personal relationship with God (our creator).
Through that relationship, we find EVERYTHING we need to live a life marked by glory and excellence in virtue.!!!!
AND HE IS NOT EVEN DONE!!!!!!
by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
“by which”
Through the knowledge (relationship) with GOD
“He has granted to us His precious and very great promises...”
Again we see the word... “Granted”
Note: perfect tense
It has already been granted
continues to be granted in the unknown future.
We already know we have been granted “all things pertaining to live and godliness...”
here we see that also includes: “His precious and very great promises.”
Wow! What these promises?
Well lets see what the purpose of them are:
“… so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sin.”
partakers of the divine nature...
There IS an expectation to the way we should live.
having escaped from the corruption that is in the world.
Are these promises for now or in the future?
Are we escaping now or when we are taken out of this world of sin?
I say it is BOTH
based on what we’ve read so far (and will read in the next few weeks)
Through His sacrificial death on the cross, Jesus has granted us an opportunity to have a ever deepening relationship with God,
This relationship is to result in our lives being marked by godliness, glory, and excellence in virtue.
Theses are promises and expectation for today.
There will be a day when this kind of existence seems natural.
But these are gifts and expectation for today.
