Romans 8:26-27
Message 4

Praying in a World of Distractions

Me:
1. The Garden of Gethsemane (Image)

It was a life changing event

i. I prayed that day Lord not my will but yours.

Do you know the story?

i. Matthew 26:31-46

Jesus, Peter, James, and John

“Stay here and keep watch with me.”

iv. When Jesus returns, they are asleep.
Vs. 40-41 Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? 41 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”
vi. Have I been there.
vii. This happens three times

People will ask me how can we pray for you?

i. I also always say energy
We:

A world of distractions

A tool of the devil

i. Look at those disciples
ii. Here is one of the most important events in the history of the human race
iii. What do they do? Sleep through it
b. Notice again what Jesus says to the disciples

Keep watch, Pray, Don’t give in to temptation

ii. Our spirit is willing but the body is weak
iii. Jesus was saying to the disciples that Satan is has distracted you
iv. You have given into the temptation
c. We are no different than those disciples
i. There is a world of distractions out there
ii. We fall for those tricks all the time
iii. The bible says the Spirit helps in our weakness to pray
iv. When we are distracted
v. How does God’s Holy Spirit do that?

By giving us life

(Let me show you)
God:

Alive in the Spirit

a. Dead in the body
Romans 8:10 NCV
Your body will always be dead because of sin. But if Christ is in you, then the Spirit gives you life, because Christ made you right with God.
ii. Your body will always be dead (distracted, asleep) because of sin. But if Christ is in you, then the Spirit gives you life (focus), because Christ made you right with God.

The key to this is being in Christ

The woman at the well

John 4:10 NLT
Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”
ii. I want you to see the connection

Being “in Christ” means being alive in Christ

It’s the Holy Spirit provides the life-giving nourishment

v. Jesus also said he is the bread of life
vi. When we are weak, the Holy Spirit steps in and helps us to pray
vii. Let’s make this practical
You:

Praying without distraction

a. The bible says

Jesus often went alone to pray

ii. In the Garden of Gethsemane

Find your prayer closet

i. When you are at your best
ii. Morning?
iii. Laying bed at night (my most heart felt prayers are then)
iv. Make it a habit
v. They may be small and short at first
vi. Find your closet
We:

A Praying Church

a. I have two prayers
i. We learn and grow in Christlikeness
ii. We become a powerful praying church.
