This Week’s Theme: Walking in Wisdom
This Week’s Word is Wisdom: True wisdom includes spiritual discernment and, above all, the reverence and knowledge of God. Scripture declares that God alone is wise and discerning, and that human wisdom is often unable or unwilling to understand his ways. God’s wisdom is expressed in both creation and redemption.
Memory Verse: Proverbs 4:7 “7 Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.”
Essence of the Text in a Sentence: Solomon provides instruction given to him by His father David concerning wisdom.
Sermon Objective: I want all those in attendance today to seek and apply God’s wisdom to their lives.
Sermon Text: Proverbs 4:1-13
Proverbs 4:1–13 NKJV
Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding; For I give you good doctrine: Do not forsake my law. When I was my father’s son, Tender and the only one in the sight of my mother, He also taught me, and said to me: “Let your heart retain my words; Keep my commands, and live. Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Exalt her, and she will promote you; She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She will place on your head an ornament of grace; A crown of glory she will deliver to you.” Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And the years of your life will be many. I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, And when you run, you will not stumble. Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; Keep her, for she is your life.
INTRODUCTION:
TRANSITION:
Sermon Proposition:

God wants His people to truly live.

I.ASK FOR IT

James 1:5; 2 Chronicles 1:10; Proverbs 3:5-7;
James 1:5 NKJV
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
2 Chronicles 1:10 NKJV
Now give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of Yours?”
Proverbs 3:5–7 NKJV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil.

II. ACQUIRE IT

Proverbs 4:5–7 NKJV
Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.
James 3:15–17 NKJV
This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.
Psalm 111:10 NKJV
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.
Proverbs 2:3–4 NKJV
Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Are you seeking for wisdom as silver?

III. PAY ATTENTION

Proverbs 4:1 NKJV
Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding;
Proverbs 4:10 NKJV
Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And the years of your life will be many.
Proverbs 8:33 NKJV
Hear instruction and be wise, And do not disdain it.
Are you listening for wise instructions?

IV. ACCEPT INSTRUCTION

Proverbs 4:4 NKJV
He also taught me, and said to me: “Let your heart retain my words; Keep my commands, and live.
Proverbs 1:5 NKJV
A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,
Proverbs 1:7 NKJV
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 15:31 NKJV
The ear that hears the rebukes of life Will abide among the wise.
Proverbs 22:17 NKJV
Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, And apply your heart to my knowledge;
Are you following the wise instructions given by the pastor?
Are you following the wise instructions given from God’s Word?
What wise instructions do you have a problem following?

V. APPLY IT

Proverbs 4:8–9 NKJV
Exalt her, and she will promote you; She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She will place on your head an ornament of grace; A crown of glory she will deliver to you.”
Proverbs 4:10–13 NKJV
Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And the years of your life will be many. I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, And when you run, you will not stumble. Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; Keep her, for she is your life.
Proverbs 2:10–13 NKJV
When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you, To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things, From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness;
Proverbs 1:10–19 NKJV
My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent. If they say, “Come with us, Let us lie in wait to shed blood; Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause; Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, And whole, like those who go down to the Pit; We shall find all kinds of precious possessions, We shall fill our houses with spoil; Cast in your lot among us, Let us all have one purse”— My son, do not walk in the way with them, Keep your foot from their path; For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood. Surely, in vain the net is spread In the sight of any bird; But they lie in wait for their own blood, They lurk secretly for their own lives. So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; It takes away the life of its owners.
Proverbs 3:28–32 NKJV
Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come back, And tomorrow I will give it, When you have it with you. Do not devise evil against your neighbor, For he dwells by you for safety’s sake. Do not strive with a man without cause, If he has done you no harm. Do not envy the oppressor, And choose none of his ways; For the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord, But His secret counsel is with the upright.
Proverbs 4:14–18 NKJV
Do not enter the path of the wicked, And do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it; Turn away from it and pass on. For they do not sleep unless they have done evil; And their sleep is taken away unless they make someone fall. For they eat the bread of wickedness, And drink the wine of violence. But the path of the just is like the shining sun, That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.
Proverbs 6:1–5 NKJV
My son, if you become surety for your friend, If you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, You are snared by the words of your mouth; You are taken by the words of your mouth. So do this, my son, and deliver yourself; For you have come into the hand of your friend: Go and humble yourself; Plead with your friend. Give no sleep to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids. Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, And like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
Proverbs 6:16–19 NKJV
These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.
Are you applying the wise instructions given from the Word of God?
Will you right now confess your sin of not following the LORD’s instructions?
Will you repent (turn from) of your sins today?
Actions speak louder than words, name the Christians you will tell your sins to and those who you will look to for accountability
