We live in a society thats always worried about tomorrow.
When are you going to…?
What are you going to do?
What if?
When this happens?
What’s your 10 year plan
Investments
Retirement
When this happens?
We must understand that there is a correct and Biblical way to view tomorrow.
It will make God happy and life easier!
Proverbs 27:1 “1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; For thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”
This is a clear instruction not to boast, brag, and believe in tomorrow.
Tomorrow is hypothetical
Its so easy to take stock in tomorrow.
Even David did it.
Psalm 30:6-8 “6 And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.
7 Lord, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: Thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.
8 I cried to thee, O Lord; And unto the Lord I made supplication.”
Let’s learn how we can have a healthy view of tomorrow!
A command against pride in tomorrow
Its actually a new testament command
James 4:13-16 “13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow.
For what is your life?
It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.”
Rejoicing in tomorrow is wrong.
Why?
Because God said so but for several other practical reasons
It is assuming that we(the human) possess knowledge that only God has.
It’s prideful.
Psalm 139:4 “4 For there is not a word in my tongue, But, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.”
It is not rooted in faith
Romans 14:23 “23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.”
It is us trusting in what we know not WHO we know!
Its not right.
Those plans, promises, places we’ve taken hope and stock in.
Have we assumed the place of God? It’s arrogance.
James tells us a much better and healthier way to live and it’s according to God’s will!
James 4:15 “15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”
Jesus lived according to God’s will
Luke 22:42 “42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”
Matthew 6:34 “34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.
Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”
Jesus even taught us “blessed are the meek!”
Matthew 5:5 “5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”
Meek = Those submitted to God’s will
A reminder against the pretending that we posses knowledge of tomorrow.
Proverbs 27:1 “1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; For thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”
YOU DON”T KNOW TOMORROW
We are ignorant of tomorrow.
Ecc 10:14 “14 A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?”
God is merciful in allowing this!
“To know the good might lead us to presumption, to know the evil might tempt us to despair.
Happy for us is it that our eyes cannot penetrate the thick veil which God hangs between us and to- morrow, that we cannot see beyond the spot where we now are, and that, in a certain sense, we are utterly ignorant as to the details of the future.
We may, indeed, be thankful for our ignorance.”
- C.H. Spurgeon
It’s called the present because it’s a gift!
We serve the I AM and the ALPHA & OMEGA!
He’s got the future!
Acts 1:7 “7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.”
It is for God to know the future!
Could you imagine how hard life would be if you knew everything coming?
MATTHEW 6:34 “34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.
Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”
Failure to recognize our lack of foreknowledge is foolish!
Luke 12:16-21 “16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
We don’t know our days.
We need to have faith in God for tomorrow.
2 Cor 5:7 “7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)”
We can have certain promises !
Thankfully God does give us certainties!
He has given us TODAY!
Do well today!
Jas 4:17 “17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”
Repent today!
2 Cor 6:2 “2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)”
You don’t know your end!
Build faith!
Psalm 39:4-6 “4 Lord, Make me to know mine end, And the measure of my days, what it is; That I may know how frail I am. 5 Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; And mine age is as nothing before thee: Verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity.
Selah.
6 Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: Surely they are disquieted in vain: He heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.”
We can know Christ’s promises!
Revelation 19:10 “10 And I fell at his feet to worship him.
And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
Talking about Jesus and what he is going to do is wise talking about to future because it prophecy!
Prophecy is not given primarily to tell you what the future holds.
It is given to tell you Who holds the future—Jesus.
- Rogers, Adrian
Go forward in faith!
Not based on your perception of tomorrow but God’s promises!
1 Peter 1:13 “13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;”
Hebrews 12:1-2 “1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
