Introduction - There have been a lot of predictions about the date of the Parousia or in other words the second coming of Christ. They have all been wrong. there are even predictions that have been made all the way out to 2057. I don’t understand how people can think they know when He will return. He told us that He didn’t even know when He would return. Only the Father knows. The fact of His return can be both a comforting hope and a frightful thought.
Hope…
Frightful...
The Statement of faith of the Christian and Missionary Alliance says this about the return of Christ Jesus:
The Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is imminent 32 and will be personal, visible, and premillennial. 33 This is the believer’s blessed hope and is a vital truth which is an incentive to holy living and faithful service. 34 (32 Hebrews 10:37, 33 Luke 21:27, 34 Titus 2:11–14)
To better understand what this is saying let’s take a closer look at the individual parts of this statement.
The Main ideas of the first sentence are that: It is imminent, it will be personal, it will be visible, and it will be premillennial.
The main ideas of the second sentence are that: it is the believer’s blessed hope, it’s a vital truth and an incentive to holy living and faithful service.
The first idea is that this Second Coming is imminent! Exactly what does that mean?
Imminent - Swift / coming soon about to happen
The reason it is imminent is because no one knows when it is coming. If we knew we could be ready - we must have a sense of urgency about His return.
34 “Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.
35 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.
Why should this create a sense of expectation and urgency? Well… live with a sense of expectation because no one knows when He is coming and urgency because it will be before this generation passes away.
The best clue we have for when this will come about is...
14 “This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
These verses together bring an urgency to preach the gospel to hasten the day of His return - before this generation passes away.
This second coming will be personal.
Personal - of, affecting, or belonging to a particular person rather than to anyone else (Won’t send another)
This is His mission - He won’t send another. Only He has the power and authority to make all things new.
31 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne.
This second coming will be visible.
Visible - able to be seen
27 “Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
This is the way He ascended into heaven and this is the way He will return. - Social Media -
11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.
This is the coming of Christ. He is returning to wage war against the beast and the false prophet and all those who are still unrepentant after the seven years of the great tribulation.
This second coming will be Premillennial.
Premillennial - existing or occurring before a new millennium
6 Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years.
Now for the main ideas of the second sentence: it is the believer’s blessed hope, it’s a vital truth and an incentive to holy living and faithful service.
First of all it is the believer’s blessed hope.
Why is this a hope for Christians? His return points to something new and wonderful. Everything in the scriptures points to Satan and the fall as the backdrop for the entire story. Creation started out as Good - but then sin and death came into the picture. Because of this scripture is full of prophecies talking about better things to come. A world where all things will be made new again, a time when we can live in fellowship with God. A time when sin and death will be no more. This wonderful time that we hope for is the new Heaven and the new earth.
Revelation 21:3–5a (NASB95)
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them,
4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”
5 And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”
This is the blessed Hope of believers.
I don’t know about all of you but I’m tired of crying, the pain, death, an especially of the pain this fragile body undergoes way to often. Most importantly of all I want to dwell among God’s people and be in His presence.
Christ’s second coming is a vital truth of the scriptures.
There is no way around this. Any one who says Christ will not return doesn’t get it or is simply choosing to ignore dozens of verses in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. If these verses are being ignored as irrelevant or incorrect what else would the individual be ignoring? Old Testament verses speak of the Day of the Lord, which is the Day the Lord will arrive and bring judgment upon the unrighteous.
28 so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.
How can a verse so plain be ignored or called irrelevant? Christ will come again like a thief in the night so we must be ready.
Christ’s second coming is an incentive to holy living and faithful service.
So what is an incentive?
Incentive - a thing that motivates or encourages one to do something.
In my Bible this passage is entitled “Be ready for His coming” and it should provide us will all the incentive we need to live Holy lives and to faithfully serve Him.
42 “Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.
43 “But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.
44 “For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.
45 “Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time?
46 “Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes.
47 “Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
48 “But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My master is not coming for a long time,’
49 and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards;
50 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know,
51 and will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Be ready, be diligently about the business of the Lord - making disciples. What if He came now today - would He be pleased with the way you are living your life?
For almost 2,000 years the children of God have been watching and waiting for Christ to return. Our urgency should be great. The scriptures point to His return, things that were written of are beginning to come about. We can not say that He hasn’t come yet so let’s not worry about it. We must be about the Lord’s business. Be Holy and be faithful. Preach the gospel for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son so that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
End with this!!
As the book of Revelation ends Jesus says this...
Revelation 22:12–13 (NASB95)
12 “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.
13 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
