Can I get a Witness
Can I get a Witness
john 5:31-47
john 5:31-47
Hey good evening everyone that was an amazing worship give it up for the team for those of you who don’t know me I am Carmelo the high school youth pastor and boxing coach here at new vision church.
I know that pastor Pete was up here last week, and you all got some ask him anything, I could only imagine how fun that was. We are going to continue were Franklin left off two weeks ago and ill give a brief overview so that you will have context what i’m speaking about tonight so at the beginning of the chapter 5 Jesus came up to Jersualem to celebrate a festival and he see a man that had been lame 38 years and he heals him, great job miracle is done all is good, however, it was a sabbath day and work was not to be done so religious leaders get upset at the man first for carrying his mat and Jesus because he healed on a sabbath day. this is interesting to me and i believe to most people and Jesus will explain it in other words can a miracle just happen any day of the week like yo its miracle Monday all good here no harm for foul the Jews would have most likely wanted Jesus to rule over them, but we can see that the intention for this miralce do on the sabbath was to open up the festering wound of religious tradition and allow for the healing power of God to start its work . If God is doing something who has the right to call that unlawfully. the Sabbath was given to glorify and remember God I think doing Good for someone in the name of the lord. Jesus tells them He is only do what the Father is doing, so he was claiming to be God’s son and equal with Him. is his Father and the authority the Father has given him and the work Jesus is to do while he was here on earth to heal, save, to judge and to ultimately pay the price for our sins.
so that bring us to the text open up to john 5 31-47 we will see Jesus giving his witnesses to his assertion to the authority he has .
John 5:31 If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32. There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33. You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34. Not that the testimony I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35. He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36. But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John, For the works that the Father has given to me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the father has sent me, 37. and the father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, 38. and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39. You search the Scriptures because you think in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me 40. Yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41. I do not receive glory from people. 42. But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44. How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 45. Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46. For if you have believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. 47. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words
Prayer:
If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
Laws Concerning Witnesses
(Deuteronomy 17:6) (19:15)
The word witness in the Greek word Martureo- testify charge to give evidence bear record have obtain of a good report honest be well reported of , testimony. you heard that term snitches get stitches well same here in this most people would testify that Jesus is the lord publicly would most likely be put to death outcast-ed from society
19:15 “A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established.[1]
Deuteronomy 17:6
6 On the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses the one who is to die shall be put to death; a person shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness.[2]
Jesus speaks of John the Baptist yet doesn’t even validate him as the witness who will prove his case because he his only a man/ a great man and prophet that prepared the way the messiah but he had sinners repenting towards to God.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
all the libraries in the world could not contain the miracles and things Jesus Does because he is living an active even today through his spirit in his Church
the first witness being brought into the stand is his miracles
The miracles Jesus did were his first witness publicly and privately. The miracles are God the Father’s way of showing to Jesus’ doing the things God has called him to, we that as Nicodemus states in chapter 3 :2“ rabbi, we know that you are a teacher from God, for no one can do these things unless God is with him” similarly, Jesus tells the disciples in chapter 9 that the man who had been born blind was that way not from the sin of that man or his parents but that the works of God might be displayed through him
I know for me the miracle of Jesus made the impossible happen and these things are witness that no one can deny
, the Father, affirms at Jesus baptism as the Holy spirit falls on him this is my some in him, I am well pleased God also tells peter James and John on the mountain when Jesus was transfigured that this is my son in whim I’m well pleased
the Scriptures they search the scriptures and have information about God and his laws but have missed the reason for those laws and what the end result was to be as they would follow them wholeheartedly back in the Abrahamic covenant says that his people would be a blessing to all nations and in Jesus opening up salvation for all that promise is being fulfilled Jesus said he came to fulfill the law and that he did he paid the price in full and that gives us today to honor to come to the father and ask in Jesus name and God the father will hear us may we not get so full of head knowledge that we cannot apply what we know into the world that is why our church is kind a messy and never really comfortable because we are constantly bringing in people who need the physician the councilor the healer the savoir our lord Jesus I love that because I am a product of the church accepting me and guiding me back to Jesus. And now I can be profitable for the kingdom of God by going through the word with you all
Jn 5:41-47 the cause and the end of Jewish unbelief
I do not receive glory from people. But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
They will not come to Jesus because they do not want glory from God they want glory from man or the nations around them like the days of David and Solomon. Being affirmed and applauded by others of status.
Good old days in my prime
43Many have come in their own name and own have received them Alexander the Great from Josephus
43 David came in the name of the lord against Goliath, and no one thought he would defeat the giant however with God.
45 Moses will be their accuser the one who the physically by Gods miraculous power freed the Jews, will in turn say you have failed to uphold the commandments. The Jewish peoples hopes are on even till tis day they have a 6th rule meaning if they can do 6 of the ten commandment. however that is not what we see with
Jesus in his sermon on the mount beatitudes he raises the bar for the Jewish people and without out God it is impossible as man strives to make it into heaven by dong just enough god to outweigh the bad as we compare our lives to the Bible and Jesus standards we fail. That is why Jesus sitting in heaven on his throne knew he had to come down to save us from our own self driven destruction and all God wants is for us to accept that we can’t do it on our own but having Jesus be our Anointing Lamb that takes away the sins of the world.
Landing the plane: As we close, I hope our lives will be filled with the knowledge of knowing God because that is the being of eternal life may we perform and live our lives for an audience of one.
May we see him working and join because we want to be with the Father.
I pray that this message stirred in us to not only be in the word but apply it to our lives as God would see according to his will.
Prayer:
Questions:
1 Do I tell others about Jesus and his transforming miracles in my life?
2 Do I read Scripture to gain knowledge or to see God’s heart?
3. Do I value God’s approval more than the approval of others?
