The Promise
Acts 1:6–7 KJV (WS)
When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
Wilt thou - dost thou
They awaited a material kingdom, for the Spirit was not yet poured out on them to give them a more enlightened conception of it.
2. The beginning Jesus ministry John focus on the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
3. The end of Jesus ministry the Holy Ghost is still the focus point.
He here echoes the earlier declaration of the Baptist.
This strong emphasis on the baptism with the Holy Spirit, as being greater and more essential than the baptism with water, anticpates the central thrust of the Book of Acts.
Matthew 3:11 KJV (WS)
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
Mark 1:8 KJV (WS)
I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
Luke 3:16 KJV (WS)
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
Acts 1:5 KJV (WS)
For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
Not many days after today.
Without this baptism there would have been no Book of Acts, and in fact no Church of Jesus Christ today.
Without the baptism of the Holy Spirit in personal experience there is no adequate enablement for victorious living and effective service.
Acts 1:12–14 KJV (WS)
Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey. And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
Upper Room
Acts 1:8 KJV (WS)
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Power should be “authority.” The Greek word is not dynamis, as in verse 8, but exousia.
Properly this means: “freedom to exercise the inward force or faculty expressed by dynamis,” and so “right” or “authority.
It gives at once both the power and the program of the Church of Jesus Christ. The power is the Holy Spirit. The program is the evangelization of the world.
For a person to claim to be filled with the Spirit and yet not to be vitally concerned about world missions is to deny his profession.
When the Holy Spirit fills the human heart with His power and presence, He generates the urge to carry out Christ’s command. The converse is also true:
The Great Commission cannot be fulfilled without the power of the Spirit.
Acts 4:33 KJV (WS)
And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
Power - greek word dynamis which means dynamite dynamo - power, might, strength, or force.
Power comes when the Holy Spirit comes.
This is because He is power.
There is no spiritual power apart from the presence of the Spirit of God.
That is why every Christian needs to be filled with the Spirit.
Acts 1:8 KJV (WS)
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
“No longer will Israel wait for the nations to come to her, bringing gifts to Jerusalem, instead, the witnesses of Jesus will go out from Jerusalem to the nations.”
“Can a church which sits on its corner and is content to minister merely to those who come to it claim to be faithful to this command?”
Praying For The Holy Ghost
Acts 1:14 KJV (WS)
These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
(1) Until their spirits blended—one accord in prayer.
(2) Until their longing became dominant desire—prayer and supplication.
(3) Until their consecration deepened to full and final commitment to the will of God.
Acts 1:4–5 KJV (WS)
And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
(4) Until their faith rose to the pitch of expectancy for immediate fulfillment of the promise.
Acts 2:1–2 KJV (WS)
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
Mary was present at this time.
Acts 1:14 KJV (WS)
These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
Mary needed the Holy Ghost like everyone else.
Mary is not the queen of heaven or the mother of God.
Jesus is from ever lasting.
John 8:56–59 KJV (WS)
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
4. I order for Mary to have been the mother of God, she would have existed before Abraham also, and would have had a supernatural birth.
Speaking In Tongues
Early reference to speaking in tongues
Isaiah 28:11 KJV (WS)
For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
Isaiah 33:19 KJV (WS)
Thou shalt not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive; of a stammering tongue, that thou canst not understand.
1 Corinthians 14:21 KJV (WS)
In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
