I. PAUL’S CHARGE TO TIMOTHY (V. 1- 5)
I. PAUL’S CHARGE TO TIMOTHY (V. 1- 5)
Paul’s charge to Timothy comes after 2 Tim.3:16-17
describing how the word of God is given by God, and how the word of God is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction .
for what is right, how to get right and how to stay right
A. WHAT IS THE CHARGE TO TIMOTHY (V. 1-2)
Paul charges or to “testify”
the picture is that Paul testified to Timothy the Gospel truth. And now Timothy was to listen and follow this testimony in order to be a good pastor
the charge or the testimony that Paul was giving Timothy was to “preach the word” (v.2)
“preach the word” has the picture of a Harold. A king’s Harold who would proclaim the message of the king . The Harold was the instrument of the king, meant to speak only the message of the King.
interesting that Paul tells Timothy to preach the word of God, or the content that he is to speak is the message of the King only, the word of God.
Timothy was to be a vessel to speak forth the message of the king .
Be faithful to what you are called to do
Paul is testifying before the court and the one who will ultimately judge for what he has done, is the Lord.....
Gives insight that God has given each one of us a task in this life. He has created us with a purpose in mind, to be with Him and to be used by HIm.
Paul is urging Timothy to be faithful to what he has been called to do, for ultimately we will give an account of our what we were given to the Lord. We will be based on our faithfulfness to complete that task.
2 Corinthians 5:10
“ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil”
B. WHEN TIMOTHY TO FULFILL THE CHARGE (V. 2)
In season or out of season. This speaks of being ready at all times. To be on stand by
the preaching or sharing of the gospel message does not only happen from the pulpit on a Sunday morning, but it should happen wherever we find ourselves. At work, school, at the stores etc.....
the thought is to be ready for any opportunity that the Lord may present, whether the timing is good or not good.
being ready in all seasons requires being prepared in all seasons.
C. HOW IS TIMOTHY TO FULFILL THE CHARGE (V. 2)
Timothy is to use the word of God to ......
convince - speaking of exposing a fault, refuting
Rebuke - to give strong warning or admonish
Exhort - to come near, invoke or invite
teaching - doctrine, teaching providing instruction
these (4) things all have to do with the word of God in relation towards others. The use the word of God to verbally speak to others.
there are also (2) things here that Paul uses that also have to do with the word of God in relation to me and how the word has worked in me.
convince- there can be a convincing of the truth of God’s word in relation to my personal life. The truth about God transforming me by His Holy Spirit working through His word in me is a truth that cannot be debated.
longsuffering - being patient. Patient with those who would not believe the word of God, Patient with those who will speak against me and the word of God.
we are told that Longsuffering is a fruit of the spirit. In other words it is something that is not natural to me but is produced by the Holy Spirit as I cultivate this relationship with Jesus.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
so the preaching of the Gospel or harolding the message of the King is done both through the verbal and written word of God, but it is also communicated by the word of God transforming my life.
C. WHY WAS TIMOTHY TO FULFILL THE CHARGE (V. 3-4)
A. People will not endure sound doctrine (v.3)
there will be a time when people will no longer have a desire for hearing good biblical teaching. They will not have the endurance , the desire to listen to good biblical teachings
B. People will set up teachers according to their desires (3-4)
they will have itching ears and find teachers who will scratch that itch. In other words, they will only want to hear what they want to hear. They will not want to hear the biblical teachings of the word of God because it will be offensive.
Illustration of my kids asking both parents the same thing trying to get a different answer
true biblical teaching will be offensive to my flesh and will call me to respond to that offense by putting to death the old sinful man
people even today do not want to sit under good biblical teachings for this very reason. they do not want to be offended, they don’t want to be convicted and they don’t want to have to change their lives.
but true biblical teaching is exactly what it does
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,
C. People will turn away from truth (v. 4)
Because the word of God is truth , because it sets a biblical standard in our lives, because it causes a change in our lives, people will tend to remove themselves from the truth.
this is exactly what the world is doing today. it is trying to remove the word of God from all areas of life, to remove absolute truth and to redefine truth that is not offensive and that does not cause a person to change.
“ IT IS BUT A SHORT STEP FROM “ITCHING EARS” TO TURNING ONE’S EARS AWAY FROM THE TRUTH”. - WARREN WEIRSBE
“ Once people have rejected the truth, they turn to fables. It is not likely that the man made fables will convict them of sin or make them want to repent. The result is a congregation of comfortable, professing Christians, listening to a comfortable, religious talk that contains no Bible doctrine. These people become the prey of every false cult because their lives lack a foundation in the Word of God
D. Paul’s Warning (v.5)
“but you” Paul makes it a point to tell Timothy that he is to be a contrast to those who he just spoke about. A contrast to those who have moved away from the truth of the word of God.
Be watchful
See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
“Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods. But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
speaking of last days and the need to be watchful … there is the good servant who is “watchful” for his master’s return. His life is being directed by the coming and the anticipation of his master. This anticipation and focus keep him watching and allowed him to be faithful.
the “evil” servant said to himself the master is delayed...... That word “evil” Kokus” which means to be rotten on the inside, in an un natural way. It gives the impression as an apple that was once good and rip, became rotten and by the influence of time or other poisons
the key is having the proper perspective. Being focused on heaven, the things of God and the return of our Lord will have a purifying effect and cause us to be faithful
endure affliction
do the work of an evangelist
fulfill your ministry - the importance of doing what God has called us to do. Everyone is called to do a different thing in the body of Christ (1 Cor 12) . We are to be faithful to do what we are called to do whatever that may be ..... as we mentioned already, we will give an account of how faithful i was to do what I was called to do
Parable of Talents ( Matt. 25:14-30)
God has given to each one of us talents, gifts, abilities, resources to go along with a specific calling. And this calling is what the Lord would want us to be continuing to do until He returns.
each one of us will give an account for what we were given and how faithful we were to it.
Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
II. Paul’s Life (v. 6-8)
Paul’s Departure
Paul understands that his life is coming to an end as he makes reference to being “poured out as a drink offering”
His “departure” is at hand. His word has a meaning of setting up the sails , of unlooking the ox from the yoke, of putting up the tent. .....
the picture of Paul understanding that he is picking up the anchor is you will and setting sail to heaven, he is unhooking the animals from the work that he has been doing to rest. He is picking up this old tent and going to a new mansion prepared for him in heaven.
Paul Finishing the Race (v.7-8)
I fought the good fight- PAUL HAD INTEGRITY
speaking as a boxer who fought on the right side of the fight. He fought for the right reason, for the right cause .
2. I finished the race - PAUL WAS CONSISTENT
speaking of completing what he started. He did not just run to come up short but he ran to finish what he started.
what really matters in the race is how you finish
TO FINISH A RACE I MUST BE
A. DISCIPLINED ( 1 COR. 9:25-27)
B. MUST NOT BE HINDERED BY WEIGHT (HEB. 12:1)
C. MUST HAVE MY EYES ON THE GOAL (HEB. 12:1-2)
3. I have kept the faith - PAUL WAS FAITHFUL
Speaking of about being faithful
wesbster’s on faithful
steadfast in affections
2. firm in duty
3. true to a standard
Result (v.8)
the crown of righteousness - “stephanos” which is the crown yo receive upon victory in the games .
this is what Paul was focused on . His mind, heart and eyes were focused on the things of heaven , on the prize. he had the proper perspective .
CONTRAST
Contrast of Paul and Demas.
Paul was faithful to the Lord and to his calling. He had the proper perspective.... Demas was a man who lost his perspective much like the evil man in the parable of the faithful servant. He was once good but we are told that he loved the present world. His affections were given to the worldly pleasures, this made him not faithful to his duty or his Lord
