Hebrews Chapter 11
SLIDE 1 “HALL OF FAITH “image slide
So we don’t forget what Stacy covered last week, quick look before moving on in rest of Hebrews 11
Looking at verse 1 , what do you feel deep inside? How would you describe this verse?
SLIDE 2
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
What did the book of Hebrews start off all about? The supremacy of Christ
What 11;1 have anything to do with the supremacy of Christ?
SLIDE 3
verse 2- men gained approval by faith
SLIDE 4
verse 3- by faith we understand the worlds were
prepared by the word of God
what is seen was not made of the visible
(cross ref John 1:3 and Hebrews 1:2)
Would someone read John 1:3 ?
3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
Would someone read Hebrews 1:2 ?
2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
verse 4 is pretty important in that it reveals a couple pretty cool things
SLIDE 5
4 By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying about his gifts, and through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks.
Lets look at that in Genesis
SLIDE 6
1 Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the Lord.”
2 Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
SLIDE 7
3 So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground.
4 Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and for his offering;
SLIDE 8
5 but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell.
Any insight as to why Abel had faith but Cain did not?
countenance means face fallen / NLT says dejected or fall away
So God shedding animal blood in place of leaves might mean something???
Also what did God do to the ground in chapter 3
SLIDE 9
17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’;
Cursed is the ground because of you;
In toil you will eat of it
All the days of your life.
SLIDE 10
Genesis 3:18–19 (NASB95)
18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you;
And you will eat the plants of the field;
19 By the sweat of your face
You will eat bread,
Till you return to the ground,
Because from it you were taken;
For you are dust,
And to dust you shall return.”
Where did Abel’s blood cry to God from?
Do you think from what Adam and Eve experienced from all this that they would have taught and passed down to their children?
And that would be an example of learning faith by.......??
SLIDE 11
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
SLIDE 12
Cain- first example of being religious not righteous (no life / death)
Abel- first martyr of the faith, still speaks to us today ( eternal life)
Pharisees had a religion, religion will resort to hatred and and killing
Abel was a worshipper by faith / faith worshipping
Okay verse 5 - Enoch, lets check his faith out
SLIDE 13
5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death; and he was not found because God took him up; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God.
What we will see in action big time tonight is how wonderful cross referencing is and just how much a blessing the whole council of God is in His word.
But when you think about it, what does all this do? Builds faith
Enoch could be an example of faith walking
SLIDE 14
Abel - faith worshipping
Enoch - faith walking
Let’s take a look how Enoch life would be walking in faith
SLIDE 15
22 Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters.
SLIDE 16
23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years.
24 Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
Well Enoch had it made because he walked with God in an upright world?? No a wicked world. Next chapter in Genesis 6 tells about the corruption of mankind with the sons of God having relations with the daughter sof man etc Nephilim
So in verse 6 of Hebrews 11 the writer gives a very very important encouragement
SLIDE 17
6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
SLIDE 18
impossible - (adunatos) powerless, weak, impotent
seek - (ekzeteo) pursue earnestly
By the way please just means please but rewarder means “pay wages”
Let’s look at one more type of faith in Noah verse 7
SLIDE 19
7 By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
How do you think Noah was moved in his heart to have faith? feared God and acted on what God told him
Noah may have never seen a flood or perhaps a rainstorm
Noah’s actions generated a great deal of attention, what attention did his actions get him?
His faith influenced his family - saved
His faith revealed the world’s unbelief
Jesus used this event to warn people of His return - still lives on
The people just involved in everyday life and activities - Noah’s faith ignored
Noah’s type of faith could be ?
SLIDE 15
Abel - faith worshipping
Enoch - faith walking
Noah - faith working
Next time we will look at the Patriarch’s faith and what type
Can faith worshipping be practiced in our lives today? Faith walking? Faith working?
