Session Four: Communication and Conflict Resolution
Homework Review
Basis for Communication
God made us communicative beings (see Genesis 1-2).
He made us to communicate with Him and with one another.
It is based on the Trinity.
Marriage above all relationships, is the place where communication is absolute key.
It is the difference between a mediocre marriage and a terrible marriage.
It is the difference between a good marriage and a great marriage.
It is the difference between a God-glorifying marriage and a self-glorifying marriage.
We all know the how-tos’ of good communication, but the Bible provides specific keys to God-glorifying, spouse-edifying communication.
Proverbs 18:21 demonstrates the power of communication for good or evil.
I. Avoid Harming Communication- Prov.
12:22; Prov.
12:19
Joel James lists these harmful communications:
Lies
Unkept promises
Exaggerations
Minimizations
Distortions
Insults (1 Peter 3:8-9)
Teasing and Sarcasm (Prov.
26:18-20)
Corrupt communication (Eph.
4:29)
Gossip (Prov.
17:9)
Interruption/Answering before listening (Prov.
18:13)
II.
Focus on the Work of Christ- 1 Cor.
13:4-7
We are following Paul’s map for sanctification (put on, renew, put on, cf.
Eph.
4:22-24).
This is the renew part where we see the way Christ deals with us.
III.
Engage in God-glorifying Communication- Prov.
15:1-2, 4, 7, 18, 28
A. Be gentle in your verbal and nonverbal- 15:1, 2
B. Be wise in your choice of words- 15:2
C. Seek to build up- 15:7
D. Take time when getting aggravated/angry- 15:18 (Eph.
4:26-27)
D. Think before you speak- 15:28
IV.
Conflict Resolution
Follow through with the above, prayerfully, and seek to glorify God and help your spouse.
*You will need to employ these truths with prayer with greater intensity to match the intensity of the conflict
*If you reach a point that you cannot resolve the problem on your own,
