5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Christ Our Advocate

2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

The message- the Gospel “good news”
proclaim to you- the world needs to hear it, we needed to hear it and still need to hear it.
Exalting Jesus in 1,2,3 John We Have a Gospel Message to Announce

“God is light”

Exalting Jesus in 1,2,3 John We Have a Gospel Message to Announce

The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom should I fear?

The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom should I be afraid?

(Ps 27:1)

Then Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Exalting Jesus in 1,2,3 John We Have a Basic Truth to Affirm

In 1 John the statement “God is light” means God has as His very nature and being the source of life.

Do you not feel a little more alive on a bright sunny day?
On a dim gloomy day, we often feel down and less energetic.
God provides a light that gives us life that we cant have without Him.
A life worth living, God makes us truly alive.
Exalting Jesus in 1,2,3 John We Have a Basic Truth to Affirm

It must become a central intention of all of our lives to take this light into the darkest of places.

6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (1 Jn 1:6). (2016). Crossway Bibles.
“fellowship with him”- we say we are born again, have the light of life in us, that God is our intimate friend!
“walk in darkness”- live for ourselves not God! NO, that means you live in complete sin and hate God.
2 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Eph 2:1–3). (2016). Crossway Bibles
Exalting Jesus in 1,2,3 John Do Not Lie to Others (1 John 1:6–7)

we lie and do not practice or live out the truth

Exalting Jesus in 1,2,3 John Do Not Lie to Others (1 John 1:6–7)

The verb “walk” is in the present tense and speaks of a continuous and consistent pattern of life.

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Ro 6:1–2). (2016). Crossway Bibles.
We say we know God, that we belong to God, but our lives and our continuous sin contradicts our claims. That contradiction means that we lie to others about God. As to say that God is ok with our continuous sin, our lack of concern about sin. We are lying to them because we don’t have fellowship with God!

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin

Walk in the light-

3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.

the blood of Jesus cleanses us from ALL sin

8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

IF we claim to be sinless, we are lying to ourselves. We should live lives that make it very difficult for others to identify sin in us, but we know that doesn’t mean that we are sin free.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

We need to identify and recognize the sin in our lives and confess it to God!
IF we live and walk in the Light, The Light will reveal our sin to us.
Exalting Jesus in 1,2,3 John Do Not Lie to Yourself (1 John 1:8–9)

He who cannot find water in the sea is not more foolish than the man who cannot perceive sin in his members.

He is faithful and just to forgive us!

If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

God says all have sinned, so if we say we haven’t, we are calling Him a liar.
We are denying that we even need a savior.

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
