Mothers, Like No Other
Matthew 20:20-28; Mark 7:24-31; John 2:1-12
Happy Mother’s Day!
This morning, it’s my honor to focus my message on Mothers.
This is a day that touches everyone. I’m mindful that Mother’s Day and the
general topic of “mother”, affects everyone differently. But for the most part,
Mothers and Motherhood brings warm and loving thoughts – whether our mothers
remain with us now or if they have departed to be with the Lord.
Some might still be in search of their mothers; others are hoping to repair the
mother-child-adult child relationship. Nevertheless, regardless of how we as
children process and surmise the meaning of our Mothers, from God’s vantage
point, the purpose and position of every mother is that they are a gift from Him.
Thank God for the gift of our mothers.
Mothers are truly a gift from God. They are like no other. So because of that, I
would like to speak to you from a message entitled: Mothers, Like No Other!
The thought of “Like No Other” emphasizes the uniqueness of something or
someone as compared to all other things. Well, the verdict is in – of all the things
outside of Jesus, there is no comparison to God’s creation of the position of Mother
and Motherhood.
In this message, I simply want to illustrate how it is that Mothers are like no other
and why.
Of course, to draw out the essence of this message, I want you to reflect on the
many things in life that have earned the label of “Like No Other”. For instance, a
“like no other” experience might be:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Getting your first bicycle or car
Living in the outdoors – being one with nature/camping
Getting Saved, being Born Again
Moving from being poor to being rich, and vice versa
Growing up in a certain culture or ethnicity
Experiencing your first love; or your first kiss, or reconnecting with a lost
love or loved one.
• Experiencing a miracle
• Getting or accomplishing something long anticipated: Graduation, dream
house, or fantasy trip.
You get the picture. The euphoria and excitement that a “like no other” experience
brings is beyond compare.
So, it is with mothers. Mothers, you are beyond comparison. In fact, that’s the
only way God would have it. Can you think of anything or anyone that compares
to your mother, or that tops God’s invention and creation of the position of
Mother? I can’t!
So, from the Bible, I want to site three illustrations (there are plenty more) that
portrays the spirit of Mothers, Like No Other.
But first, let me ask – “In your assessment, “What makes Mothers “Like No
Other”?
Could it be her:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Unselfishness/Selflessness?
Her patience? Careful tolerance?
Life-giving ability
Determination and persistence?
Spirituality
Understanding spirit
Her tenderness?
It would be all of the above; but above all, it is her Unconditional, unbiased, and
fearless Love.
Listen to these three illustrations of three different mothers being like no other
and going where no father has ever gone before!
I want you to simply catch the spirit of motherhood in these illustrations:
Illustration One:
Matthew 20:20-28
Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Him [Jesus] with her sons,
kneeling down and asking something from Him.
20
21
And He said to her, “What do you wish?”
She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right
hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.”
But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to
drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I
am baptized with?”
22
They [the sons] said to Him, “We are able.”
So He said to them, “You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the
baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not
Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.”
23
24
And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers.
But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the
Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them.
26
Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among
you, let him be your servant. 27 And whoever desires to be first among you, let
him be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to
serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
25
Point: Mother wanting only the BEST for her children, no matter what it takes.
Plus, Mothers are the epitome of servant hood.
Illustration Two:
Mark 7:24-31
24
From there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He
entered a house and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden. 25
For a woman [a mother] whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard
about Him, and she came and fell at His feet.
26
The woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him
to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 But Jesus said to her, “Let the children
be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the
little dogs.”
And she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under
the table eat from the children’s crumbs.”
28
Then He said to her, “For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of
your daughter.”
29
30
And when she had come to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her
daughter lying on the bed.
Point: Mothers will move heaven and earth for the good, heath, and wellbeing of
her children. Mothers are unstoppable.
Illustration Three:
John 2:1-12
1
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of
Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the
wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him,
“They have no wine.”
Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My
hour has not yet come.”
4
5
His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
6
Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of
purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus
said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the
brim. 8 And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master
of the feast.” And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted the
water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the
servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the
bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the
good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have
kept the good wine until now!”
11
This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His
glory; and His disciples believed in Him.
12
After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and
His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.
Mothers are a natural at being mothers and motherly in their calling. They have an
instinctive chip that not even God can ignore. God Himself has an expectation of
how mothers will conduct themselves.
These passages represent the strong innate character qualities God has built into
the genetics of mothers.
I believe God’s gift to us through mothers is a foretaste of His unconditional love
for us. That love is one that proves God will stop at nothing to see the children of
His creation avoid perishing and for those who have given their lives to HIM –
JOHN 3:16
16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
