The Welcome

Dearly beloved, we are gathered together here in the sight of God, and in the presence of this company, to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony, which is commanded by the Apostle Paul to be honorable among all men: therefore, it is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, discreetly, and advisedly, and in the fear of God. Into this holy estate, these two persons, come now to be joined.

The Charge

Devyn Geary(Groom), will you have this woman to be your wedded wife, to live together after God’s ordinance in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love her, comfort her, and keep her, in sickness and in health; and forsaking all others, being faithful to her alone, so long as you both shall live?

Gracie Dupre(Bride), will you have this man to be your wedded husband, to live together after God’s ordinance in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love him, comfort him, and keep him, in sickness and in health; and forsaking all others, being faithful to him alone, so long as you both shall live?

The Statement of Marriage

Devyn and Gracie, as part of your marriage ceremony, you have chosen to use what has been known as “the traditional wedding vows.” They can be traced back to the 1300s in England. Yet they have remained, perhaps, the most loved and best known of all ceremonies. In these moments, before you take your vows, let’s go further back than the 1300s. Let’s travel back in time to the first wedding and look at the original match. We will seek the answer to the question some people ask, “Why do people get married?” God answers that for us in His Word.

As we examine the creation events in the Genesis 1, we discover the triune God saying, And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them (Genesis 1:26a, 27). After God created Adam, we find for the first time in Scripture where God states that part of His creative work was not good. As Adam was naming the animals, he sees that each animal came to him had a partner, yet there was no partner for him. Therefore, we find God says, ...It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him (Genesis 2:18). It is with this truth before us that we find the marriage between man and woman. We were created for community, partnership, and family.

Not only was marriage discussed at the beginning of creation, but it was later a subject of Biblical truth that was discussed in Paul’s epistle to the church at Ephesus.

Ephesians 5:22–33 (AV)22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Let us briefly look at this portion of text to find a few key truths about marriage that many have forgotten today...

Gracie, the Lord has charged Devyn with being the head of the home. However, we must understand that does not mean that he is to rule over you, neglect you, or abuse you. As head of the home, the Lord states that you, Gracie, are to respect him, honor him, and to be in agreement with him. You are to allow Devyn to lead. Truly, Gracie, you choose who you allow to lead your home before the Lord.

Devyn, as God has chosen you to be the head of the home, you have a far greater responsibility than that of Gracie. As husband, head of the home, and spiritual leader, you must understand these responsibilities that are revealed to us within the Biblical text just read.

Devyn, you are called to love Gracie with the love of Christ, Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it. As we can tell from our text, Christ’s love is sacrificial, and your love is to follow suit. We find, within the cannon of Scripture, that Jesus’ love is not sacrificial, but it is forgiving, forgetful (Does not hold a record of wrong), and purposeful, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Devyn, you are to love Gracie as you love yourself. As you would sacrifice for your wellbeing and prosperity, you should do the same for your bride.

Not only are you to lead Gracie in the home and worship before the Lord, not only are you to love her with the love of Christ, you are to provide for her as Christ provides for His bride, the Church, For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church.

Finally, you both will become one and no longer separate. Through this union, you both will leave your mother and father and begin a new family, a new home. It is in this union that you two become one flesh before God, For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

To sum it all up, I use the summation of Paul, …each of you is to love his wife as himself, and the wife is to respect her husband.

Why is all this important? Why bring these truths to light? That answer is before us, already answered by the apostle Paul himself, This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Marriage between a man and a woman is the most graceful and Biblical image that we have between the union of Christ and His church. It is through the Biblical, sacrificial, and provisional love of a Christian husband and the willful obedience and respect of the Christian wife that we see the perfect reflection of Christ’s sacrificial and provisional love, climaxed by Jesus’ vicarious death, burial, resurrection, and ascension to Heaven (where He currently prays in intercession for the believer today and yes, that includes this union), the relationship He has with His bride, the church.

Believing that you understand something of the reason for marriage as God has revealed it, are you ready now to confirm your commitment to God and to each other in Christian marriage? (Couple says, “Yes”)

I, Devyn Geary, take you, Gracie Dupre, to be my wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward. I pledge before God and these witnesses to place your good above mine, now and always, no matter the circumstances. I promise to honor you, to love you, and to cherish you until death do us part. Joyfully and willingly, I commit myself to you, and you alone.

The Pronouncement

Forasmuch as Devyn Geary and Gracie Dupre have consented together in holy wedlock, and have witnessed the same before God and this company, and, hereto have given and pledged their vows, each to the other, and have declared the same by giving and receiving rings, and by joining hands, I pronounce that they are husband and wife. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, Amen.
