Nehemiah 9:1–6
Nehemiah 9:1–6 AV 1873
1 Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them. 2 And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers. 3 And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the Lord their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the Lord their God. 4 Then stood up upon the stairs of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the Lord their God. 5 Then the Levites, Jeshua and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the Lord your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise. 6 Thou, even thou, art Lord alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

Feasting That Incites Fasting

Instead of thinking that they deserved the feast or safety they now enjoyed, they were humbled and broken at the reality that they did not deserve the mercy given to them.
Leviticus 23:43
Leviticus 23:43 AV 1873
43 that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
43 That your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
The Feast of Booths or Tabernacles was a celebration for the harvest. The Jews would bring the firstfruits of their crops to the temple as an offering to the Lord. They would make booths or tents made from palms and branches to remember the mercy of God Who had delivered them from Egypt.
This feast is a type of Christ’s mercy and deliverance from sin and its penalty.
Latter the Jews would draw water from the pool of Siloam and poor it on the bronze alter, signifying the water that flowed out of the rock in the wilderness. Jesus used this image to declare Himself God and Messiah.
John 7:2 (KJV 1900)
2 Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.
John 7:37 (KJV 1900)
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

Fasting That Leads to Confession

Owning up to the sins you've committed shows a proper view of humanity and Deity.
Isaiah 58:9
Isaiah 58:9 AV 1873
9 Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; Thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, The putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;
9 Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; Thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, The putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;
Jesus fasted, Peter fasted, Paul fasted.

12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake. 13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because you have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
