The Truth Shall Make You Free

Text:  John 8:32

Introduction: "The truth shall make you free."  These are some of the most uplifting words in the Bible.  Many people toil under bondage, sometimes never even realizing that freedom is available.  Do you languish under the burden of spiritual conflict?  The truth shall make you free.  Do you strain under the finality of death?  The truth shall make you free.  Do you try in vain to escape the bondage of sin?  The truth shall make you free.  Are you pulled in different directions by cults and catechisms?  The truth shall make you free!
In our passage today, we see Jesus in an intense encounter with religious professionals.  Jesus clearly offers hope to them if only they would believe.  Whatever chains entangle you today; there is hope.  You can know the truth (not a truth) and the truth shall make you free!

I.          The truth will make you free from the chains of spiritual darkness

A.        Jesus is the Light of the World

John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

1.      In Him there is no more darkness

1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

2. In Him is the light of life

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

2.      Spiritual darkness vanishes when you turn from ritual to the Person of Jesus Christ

B.        Jesus is the Light of truth

John 8:16-19 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. 17  It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. 19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me,  ye should have known my Father also.

1.      Two Witnesses of one truth

2.      The Father and the Son

3.      You cannot really know God the Father apart from knowing God the Son

II.       The truth will make you free from the chains of death

A.        Without Jesus you will die in your sins

1.      You will seek Him but will not reach Him

John 8:21-22 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.

Philippians 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

2.      You will die because of unbelief

John 8:23-24 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

John 3:16-18 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

B.        There is only one way to be free from death

John 8:28-30 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. 29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. 30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

1.      The price for sin is death

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

2.       Belief sets you free because Jesus paid the price

III.    The truth will make you free from the chains of sin

A.        You are under sin's bondage before Christ

1.      Servant of sin

John 8:33-34 They answered him, We be Abraham;s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou,  Ye shall be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you,  Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin

2.      Servant of hatred

John 8:37 I know that ye are Abraham;s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

3.      Servant of slander

John 8:41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

4.      Servant of your natural father

John 8:42,44 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

B.        Jesus can break the bondage of sin

John 8:36  If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Romans 6:1-2  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

2 Corinthians 10:4-5  (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)   Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

IV.    The truth will make you free from cults and catechisms

A.        The truth will reveal who Jesus really is

B.        Jesus is sinless

John 8:46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

C. Jesus is eternal

1.      The source of eternal life

John 8:51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

2.       Greater than Abraham

John 8:52-54 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself? Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:

3.      Abraham rejoiced to see Christ's day

John 8:55-57 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say,  I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

a)      Abraham was not sleeping

b)      Jesus was alive back then

4.      Jesus is Jehovah

Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you

John 8:58-59 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
