Show “Lord I Need You Skit Guys” Video
Whether we recognize it or not, the power of the Holy Spirit is working in our lives
And, as most of us would admit we need the power of the Spirit in our lives!
How many times do we find ourselves in situations like those in the video?
Frustrated, in over our heads, maybe at rock bottom, maybe just in a challenging time....and then God orchestrates something and we once again see His power!
Today we celebrate the day of pentecost...
Pentecost is a greek word that means 50....
When the day of pentecost came, it was 50 days after the passover…after Jesus died… let’s look at some context before we dive in...
John 14 begins with Jesus comforting His disciples as He has told them that He was going to leave them...
So, Jesus promises the Holy Spirit will come before he goes to the cross and is resurrected...
Right before He ascended, went back to the Father, He tells them in Acts 1....
We will jump into verse 8 in a second, but I want to make a distinction here really quickly…does anyone have a King James Bible?
Read verse 7 please
And in Verse 8 – but you will receive power….same word…but not
When you read verse 7 in the NASB, NIV, other versions it is translated “authority”
Here is why….in
verse 7 the word is “exoosea” – meaning privileged, capacity, delegated influence, or authority
So, this is the kind of authority that a boss, or law enforcement has over you
The word in verse 8 is different… but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you
Power – Greek word dynamis
What does that word sound like?
– dynamite!
Our word dynamite comes from the Greek word used here!
It means force (literally or figuratively); specifically miraculous power (usually by implication a miracle itself)
What Jesus is saying here is that you will receive miraculous power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.....
And for what?
So you can sit in a church pew and live average to mediocre lives?
Oh No! So that you can be my witnesses....
The power that they were about to receive was not authoritative power…it was dynamite power...
When they did something in the name of Jesus, explosions happened
So, when they get this kind of power inside of them, they will be Jesus’ witness in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth!
Jerusalem – where they were – in a geographical sense, its where they are.
For us, it is our own town…or in a metaphorical sense, it’s our homes....
So, the first place that we are supposed to witness to is our homes!
Judea – the surrounding area – geographically this would be Sherman county/Kansas/USA
In a metaphorical sense, this is the people that your are around outside of your home.
Could be your work associates, your friends, etc.
Thirdly,
Samaria – where the enemies are – Jews and Samaritans did not get along.
These were the unclean people.
The sinners.
The people that none of the Jews wanted to be around
With the power of the Holy Spirit, we are to be His witnesses to our enemies, the people that we don’t like, the people that we would normally not associate with
And finally,
Ends of the earth – everywhere else.
So, Jesus has told them – don’t go anywhere, stay here, and you will receive the power of the Holy Spirit
So about 10 days later, sure enough, that Jesus guy was right.
Then Peter…stood up and began to preach….a
fire sermon…much better than this one...
I want to offer you 3 things to think about today...
1. Examination
What if we stopped for a second and took a look at our lives what would we see?
Would we see someone who is constantly rushed and stressed out?
Someone who is quick to judge, and slow to love?
Someone who puts themselves above everyone else?
Or, would we see someone who is calm and patient
Someone who loves above all else?
Someone who is selfless and puts others first?
Would they say that you are someone that has the Spirit of God in them?
What would God say about us?
When God looks at you, does He say “well done good and faithful servant?”
So, this morning I encourage you to examine you life and see if the Spirit is evident in your life!
2. Expression
How is/should the Holy Spirit be expressed in our lives?
Facts about the Holy Spirit
Omnipotent – all powerful
Greek word for the Holy Spirit contains the word pneuma--which means “breath” or “breathe”
In Genesis 2:7 God breathed the breath of life into Adams nostrils
He used his breath-his power to create life.
To create everything.
Omnipresent – everywhere at all times
The Holy Spirit is all powerful, He is everywhere at all times…and, He is...
Omniscient – all knowing
God uses His spirit to reveal himself and wisdom to us.
Eternal- The Spirit of God was with God in the beginning and will be to the end
Equal- God’s spirit is equal to the Father and the Son
And, He Lives in us
He is referred to as a:
Teacher- John 14:26
Comforter- John 14:26
Truth- John 15:26
Guide- John 16:13
Interceder- Romans 8
The Holy Spirit is at work....
Jesus was full of the Holy spirit after His baptism..
Peter was full of the Holy spirit before he spoke to the Sanhedrin in Acts 4
Other apostle throughout Acts were full of the Holy Spirit....
This week, let us examine ourselves and let us understand how the Spirit is expressed, finally...
3. Exclamation
Definition: a mark used especially after an interjection or exclamation to indicate forceful utterance or strong feeling
a distinctive indication of major significance, interest, or contrast
I encourage you this week to exclaim the Holy Spirit in your lives.
The fruit that He gives us is not meant for us to keep to ourselves
A tree does not bear fruit for itself, it bears fruit to multiply – the same should be true of the fruit of the Spirit in our lives – we are meant to share that fruit with others!
Ties back into being His witness in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth
Worship Team
As we wrap up this morning, here are some take-aways:
1. Are you being His witnesses in Jer, jud, sam, ends?
2. Have you examined yourself?
Are you reproducing the fruit of the Spirit?
