Ice Cream on Purpose
This is a special podcast edition for my brothers in the Dad’s Edge Alliance.
I recently posted a picture of an odd little device and asked the guys to guess what the device was used for.
If you had never seen the device before and never seen it used, it would be tough to know simply by looking at it what it was for.
I’ll post a link to the picture of the device in the show notes.
Today, we are discussing purpose
Proverbs 19:21 (NET)
There are many plans in a the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the Lord which will stand.

The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water,

but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Men desire to know their purpose. Humans for the most part desire this, but it is especially important for a man to know that his life has meaning and purpose.
The device is question is indeed the world famous Cylindrical Ice Cream Scoop used by the Thrifty Ice Cream Company which start in L.A. back in 1929.
Here the reason I asked you to try and guess what this device was, because it’s purpose isn’t readily understandable unless of course, you have had the good fortune as some of you have to see the device used for it’s proper purpose.
If you had never seen the device used for its proper purpose then you are left to guess how it was to be used.
When we don’t understand the purpose of something or someone, we are very likely to mis-used it or even abuse it, because in the absence of the knowledge of the true purpose it was made for, we make up our purpose for the thing in question and use in a way that it wasn’t intended for.
If you were to ask this Thrifty little Scoop what it’s purpose was before it ever touched its first tub of Ice Cream, it wouldn’t be able to tell you what it was for, even if it could talk, it wouldn’t be until it had been used by someone that knew its true purpose that it could tell you what that purpose was.
If you used it for a cookie press, or medical cement gun and it had never been used as a an Ice Cream Scoop, it wouldn’t know it was being mis-used or abused.
The user would likely tell the little Thrifty Scoop that is SUCKED as a Cookie Press or was the worst medical cement gun ever made. And, the little scoop might start believing that …..because without being used for what it was truly created for, how would it know any different?
Only the designer of the little scoop truly knows how the scoop was to be used. And only those who had the information passed down by the designer could know how to use the the little scoop properly.
Here’s the truth about Purpose, if you don’t the purpose of something, you are very likely to mis-used or abused it.
If you don’t know the purpose of marriage, you will mis-use or abuse it
If you don’t know the purpose of Sex, you will mis-use or abuse it.
if you don’t known the purpose of Money, Food, Pain, Pleasure, Fatherhood....etc. you will almost assuredly mis-use or abuse this thing.
If you don’t know YOUR purpose, you will either mis-use or abuse yourself OR be mis-used or abused by others
If you don’t understand the purpose of those who you interact with or those who you love, you are very likely to mis-use or even abuse them.
when we use something for something other than its intended purpose or the way it was intended to be used will start to think of is something that sucks really isn’t working well.
When you are operating outside of our intended purpose it possible that you will be made to feel like you SUCK by casual observers who BTW don’t know your purpose either.
you can waste decades of your life and fortunes of money trying to make something function outside of its original purpose and it will almost always fail.
You can spend your whole life dedicating yourself to all sorts of endeavors and even think you are operating in purpose, but without hearing from the designer, how do you know?
You can try and define the purpose all the areas of your life for yourself, but ask yourself….. is that really the best way to learn how to know and live in and on purpose?
where are you getting your information about purpose?
how do you know the purpose of marriage sex money food you name it?
Do you want spend your days operating as crappy cookie press or unique, very cool Ice cream scoop?
